Final Fantasy 14: Bygone Serenity Officially Announced

A new Final Fantasy release is always a special moment, no matter how big or small it might be. With Square Enix officially announcing the release of Final Fantasy 14: Bygone Serenity, fans have something very exciting to look forward to in 2027.

Final Fantasy 14 has perhaps the most interesting development history of any game in the series. It was initially released in 2010, but was universally panned by players. The MMORPG then shut down in November 2012, with Square Enix later releasing a revamped 2.0 version in August 2013. This version was far more successful, both critically and commercially, and 13 years later, Final Fantasy 14 continues to receive plenty of new content with a massive active player base. Given how the game started, it’s hard to believe where it is now.

Hands-On With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: It’s Going Full Ubisoft, and I’m Already Overwhelmed

I wanted Revelation to trim some of Rebirth’s open-world excess. After playing it, I discovered Square Enix has gone in the other direction.

Final Fantasy 14: Bygone Serenity Releases in May 2027

Square Enix has opened pre-orders for a new Final Fantasy 14 collectible centered around Sphene and Living Memory. The item, the Final Fantasy 14 Music Box: Bygone Serenity, “brings home the nostalgia of Living Memory,” according to Square Enix, and features the silhouette of Sphene’s tiara on top of the case. It costs £24.99 ($28.99) and measures 6.1 x 5.3 x 4.0 cm, so it’s a dainty collectible that won’t take up much shelf space.

The 18-note music box plays the Bygone Serenity track from Final Fantasy 14‘s original soundtrack. It’s expected to release in May 2027, and pre-orders are available now. There are music boxes up for pre-order from other games in the series, too, including the Final Fantasy 9 Music Box: Roses of May. According to Square Enix, these music boxes use designs “pulled right from the scenes where these songs are heard to evoke beloved memories of the series,” so it’s fun to know some real thought went into selecting each one.

Music has always been a centerpiece of the Final Fantasy franchise, and this can be seen in much of Square Enix’s official merchandise. As well as this series of music boxes, the developer has released numerous Final Fantasy vinyl sets to celebrate each game’s soundtrack, giving fans plenty of options to expand their physical collections.

Next year, Final Fantasy 14 kicks off the Godless Realms Saga with the brand-new Evercold expansion. Planned to launch in January 2027, the expansion brings a wealth of content to the popular MMO, including a new maximum level: 110. With the game’s Nintendo Switch 2 launch last month opening the game up to a brand-new audience, it’s safe to say that Final Fantasy 14 has an exciting future.
