Final Fantasy 14 is evolving many of its battle systems in Evercold, including an overhaul of progression, a reworked job action system, and new battle content. This information was revealed during the keynote speech for the first Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Anaheim, California, on April 24.
Evercold is the next expansion for Final Fantasy 14, arriving in January 2027. The Warrior of Light and their allies will travel to the Fourth Reflection, which is threatened by a mysterious frost that has choked the land. A world full of mysterious crystalline constructs, Norse-inspired architecture, and adorable Dwarf-like cat creatures, Evercold promises an adventure unlike any that has come before.
Final Fantasy 14 Reveals Final Details for Dawntrail Patch 7.5
With Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 right around the corner, Square Enix gives players a closer look at the next major content update for Dawntrail.
Final Fantasy 14: Evercold Gameplay Changes Explained
To prepare players for their journey into the frigid Fourth, Final Fantasy 14 is introducing some massive overhauls to its gameplay systems. One of the biggest changes is the Adventurer Activity system. Rather than bonuses being tied to daily activities via the Duty Roulette, players will be able to go through a free Battle Pass-like progression system by engaging with their preferred types of content in the game. This system will reward players with Final Fantasy 14 tomestones, gear, and more, and even includes catch-up systems for fans who do not complete their weekly progress. A seasonal system will also be implemented, with each season lasting for two patch cycles.
The Evercold expansion introduces a new job action system featuring two different input styles. Reborn Mode will function as players are used to, with jobs operating similarly to their current forms in Final Fantasy 14 and its current expansion. Meanwhile, Evolved Mode will use different rotations and abilities, fewer buttons, and a streamlined design. Gamers will be able to use either mode in any content and can swap at any point while out of combat. Additionally, players will be able to use the highest item level among their leveled jobs, so they don’t need to gear each job individually.
Evolved Mode will be available for every job, including the two unannounced jobs coming in Evercold, but not limited jobs in FF14 like the Blue Mage or Beastmaster. Reborn Mode will only be available for the 21 core jobs from A Realm Reborn through Dawntrail; new jobs will only be able to use Evolved Mode.
Some major updates are coming to battle content in Evercold. Zone and quest design will receive improvements, including updates to FATEs, The Hunt, and more. Eight-man raids are getting a mid-tier difficulty between Normal and Savage, and Alliance raids will have their progression routes adjusted. Tons of new instanced content will be introduced in the expansion as well, including a crossover Alliance raid with Evangelion.

Final Fantasy 14 revealed some other gameplay improvements that will also arrive before Evercold in January 2027. Same-region player matching is being added during the Dawntrail Patch 7.5x cycle, which will allow fans across all data centers in a region to play with each other. Additionally, Final Fantasy 14 is coming to Switch 2 in August, with early access stress tests beginning soon to ensure everything runs smoothly. The award-winning Shadowbringers expansion will also be included in the critically acclaimed MMORPG’s free trial when Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 arrives on April 28, so now is the perfect time for new players to jump in.
