Spoilers for Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 and speculation for Evercold follow.
During the first Fan Festival for 2026, Final Fantasy 14 introduced the Godless Realms Saga. This new storyline kicks off in earnest with Evercold in January 2027 and will continue for a number of expansions after. With the end of the Zodiark and Hydaelyn saga in Endwalker, Final Fantasy 14 is entering a major new story arc in Evercold—one bereft of the warring gods of Dark and Light.
The Godless Realms Saga tells a different kind of tale while still pulling lore from the best parts of Final Fantasy 14, and it is truly getting off the ground in Evercold. While the expansion is still a way off, fans already know what must be done in Final Fantasy 14: Evercold and the rest of this new saga.

What is the Godless Realms Saga in Final Fantasy 14?
Navigating a World Without Zodiark or Hydaelyn
The original saga of Final Fantasy 14 was that of the struggle between Zodiark, the Dark god of the Ascians summoned to forestall the Final Days, and Hydaelyn, the Will of the Star in FF14 who sundered her dark counterpart and the world of Etheirys into fourteen shards. This story arc included everything up to and including Endwalker, where both gods were slain and the Final Days that sparked their creation were brought to a definitive end.

The Godless Realms Saga, on the other hand, pertains to the aftermath of the world, now bereft of its deities. The Ascians in Final Fantasy 14 have been decimated, their Paragons defeated, and their Overlords scattered and dwindling. The people of Etheirys are now free to pursue their dreams and find their own paths…or at least, that is what was thought.
During Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5’s Main Scenario Quest, players learned some shocking truths. The Ascian Halmarut revealed that, without Hydaelyn present to keep the Source and its reflections separate, Etheirys is naturally trying to recombine itself into a single world. However, unlike the Ascians’ attempts to do this in order to revive Zodiark, this natural Rejoining lends no regard for life. If this event, called the Solstice, takes place, all life on the Source and its reflections will cease, and the world will essentially start over from square one.
To avert the Solstice, Halmarut has created a faction of her own called the Winterers. Featuring individuals from various reflections, such as Preservation leader Calyx from Alexandria on the Ninth Shard in FF14: Dawntrail, the Winterers seek to cause artificial Rejoinings like the Ascians before them, but to prevent total annihilation, rather than revive Zodiark. While that sounds like a noble goal, if Calyx’s modus operandi in Alexandria is any indication, the Warrior of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn will not approve of their methodology. Thus, the saviors of Etheirys are confronted with twofold goals: to stop the Winterers from enacting their inevitably-cruel Rejoinings, while figuring out how to prevent the Solstice from destroying all life on the star.

How Final Fantasy 14: Evercold Plays Into the Godless Realms Saga
And Where We Might Be Going Afterward
Enter Evercold, the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion coming in early 2027, and the first serious delve into this Godless Realms Saga storyline. Though they are smart enough to not take an Ascian at their word, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn are taking the threat of the Solstice seriously. And, near the end of the Patch 7.5 story, Calyx gave the Warrior of Light a vital hint: he and Halmarut were going to the Fourth Reflection to check on the Winterer there.
The Fourth is the shard players see in the teaser trailer for Evercold, and the main setting of the expansion. According to Calyx, the reflection is a utopia afflicted by a terrible frost that pushed its denizens to build great, magic kingdoms in the sky. Full of crystalline constructs, marvelous Norse-themed architecture, and mysterious arcane giants that roam the land, the Fourth is a strange and wondrous world that promises great adventure and peril in equal measure.
It is currently unclear if the frost that plagues the Fourth is a result of the impending Solstice, but it seems likely that it is connected. Likewise, the identity of the Winterer is a mystery, as only four new characters can be seen in the Evercold trailer: the one-eyed Auri man, the praying Auri girl, the elder storyteller, and the young Au Ra listener. Though the child and the storyteller are probably innocent, the other two, or another character who has yet to be introduced, could be Halmarut’s collaborator.
Regardless, stopping the Winterers will mean nothing if the Solstice happens, and right now, it seems the only way to stop it is if the reflections are Rejoined artificially. To that end, the Scions will likely have to find a way to “deal with” the reflections in some manner, possibly by figuring out a safe way to Rejoin them without destroying the people who live there. Calyx confirmed the Winterers all have different motivations for helping Halmarut, but unlike many other villains in Final Fantasy, the Ascian herself is most interested in preserving humanity. If the Warrior of Light can figure out how to fix the Godless Realms without calamity, perhaps Halmarut might be convinced to help, even if the other Winterers still must be stopped.
All of that said, the Godless Realms Saga is only just beginning in Evercold. Beyond the Source and the Fourth, there are five other shards of Etheirys that were not Rejoined by the Ascians’ Calamities in Final Fantasy 14:
-
The First
- Nearly succumbed to the Flood of Light
- Setting of the Shadowbringers expansion
-
The Thirteenth
- Unsuccessfully Rejoined in a Flood of Darkness and became the Void
- Origin of all Voidsent in FF14, prominent in the post-Endwalker patch stories
-
The Ninth
- Nearly destroyed by the Storm Surge
- Home of Alexandria, Treno, and Living Memory from Dawntrail
-
The Eighth and the Eleventh
- Mysterious shards with no information available about them
Using Ethos, the interdimensional key tied to Azem’s crystal, the Warrior of Light now has the ability to traverse worlds. As they master this power, and perhaps figure out how to prevent the Solstice, it seems inevitable that they will visit the other un-Rejoined reflections of Etheirys in Final Fantasy 14, especially the Eighth and Eleventh. It seems the only way the Scions will be able to stop the Solstice from wiping out all life is by causing a Rejoining on their own terms on each reflection, meaning fans should get ready for a world-hopping adventure.

It is hard to say exactly how long the Godless Realms Saga will last, but the Hydaelyn and Zodiark arc ran for all of A Realm Reborn and its first four expansions over the course of about a decade. Needless to say, the critically acclaimed MMORPG is charting a course that will likely take at least a few expansions to resolve, if not longer, so fans should look forward to the twists and turns Final Fantasy 14 has in store for them.
