Final Fantasy 15 may not be the most beloved entry in the franchise, but it holds a special place in the hearts of many players largely due to its fantastic core cast of characters. Traveling across the world of Eos with Ignis, Prompto, Gladiolus, and the protagonist, Noctis, strengthens the bonds between these characters and the player throughout Final Fantasy 15‘s runtime. Now, the party leader Noctis is returning for a new adventure in the Final Fantasy universe on October 22.
The history of Final Fantasy 15‘s development is a long and storied one, going through nearly a decade of work, including a reboot and hardware change mid-development. What started as a companion game to FF13, originally titled Final Fantasy Versus 13, eventually became Final Fantasy 15 and was released in 2016 to somewhat mixed fan reception. The DLC release centering on individual characters helped flesh out the story of Final Fantasy 15, but some fans were still left wanting more from FF15‘s universe.
Noctis Returns in Final Fantasy Resonance
A recent trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance shared by Square Enix showed off the gameplay of Noctis, who appears as a Vision in the upcoming game. Final Fantasy Resonance takes the bones of the now-defunct mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and turns it into a standalone single-player game as a way to preserve the story and gameplay of its mobile counterpart. As part of Resonance‘s gameplay, players will be able to summon various characters from past Final Fantasy games to aid them in battle.
Final Fantasy Resonance releases October 22 and currently has a free demo available for fans to try.
In this trailer, fans are treated to a recap of Final Fantasy 15‘s story, including the journey of Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum, who must accept his role as the future leader of his nation and stop the Starscourge from plunging the world into an eternal night. When Noctis is summoned in Final Fantasy Resonance, the game takes a departure from its usual HD-2D art style and showcases a full 3D cutscene of Noctis using his Armiger skill to wield all the Royal Weapons from Final Fantasy 15 at once in a devastating attack.
Noctis isn’t the only returning Final Fantasy character confirmed for FF Resonance. He joins the stacked roster of Final Fantasy characters that includes Final Fantasy 2‘s Firion, Final Fantasy 9‘s Zidane, and Final Fantasy 6‘s Terra as Visions. Each of the mainline Final Fantasy games will include a summonable Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance, making the game the perfect homage to the franchise’s history.
Aside from Final Fantasy Resonance and his home game of Final Fantasy 15, Noctis has appeared in a variety of other spin-off games like the Dissidia Final Fantasy series and World of Final Fantasy Maxima. Noctis has also appeared outside the Final Fantasy franchise as a guest DLC character in Tekken 7 and has skins in games like Minecraft and The Sims 4. On October 22, Final Fantasy Resonance will officially mark Noctis’ return to the Final Fantasy series.
