Today at Summer Game Fest, Square Enix finally revealed the third and final chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. It’s called Final Fantasy 7: Revelation.
The trailer itself doesn’t show the game’s hand, but what it does show is some sick combat: we’ve got playable Vincent, Cid, Yuffie, and Tifa in a sick costume.
Final Fantasy 7’s colossal remake kicked off in 2020 with the first part of the trilogy, initially exclusively for PlayStation 4 but eventually getting a PS5 upgrade entitled Intergrade, as well as ports to PC, Switch 2 and Xbox just this year. It was followed up by the second part, Rebirth, in 2024. Both games have garnered critical acclaim and received numerous accolades for their carefully balanced reimagining of the original, remaining faithful to some elements, fleshing out others, and deviating from the source material in others, while also reinventing the combat system to great success.
Personally, I’m hoping Square gets real weird with Part 3. One of the best things (to me) about Remake and Rebirth were the ways in which they stared straight into the camera and directly questioned what a remake of a game even is, and especially a remake of one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Both games have been toying with the audience, leaving it an open question as to whether certain major plot points from the original would play out the same way as before, and I am begging Square Enix to just go absolutely bonkers metatextual with the grand finale. Guys in hoods! Rips in the sky! Zack Fair! I want it all.
Oh, yeah, and they’re putting Tifa in Street Fighter 6. Neat!
