Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Will Require Multiple Playthroughs to Beat

A new interview has revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is being designed so that players will need more than one playthrough if they want to experience everything the massive RPG has to offer. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the third and final installment in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, bringing Cloud and his allies’ reimagined journey to its conclusion.

The upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will close out the trilogy that began with 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake and continued with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024. With the story now moving toward its conclusion and more characters available than ever before, Square Enix has considerably more room to expand side content, character interactions, and party composition. That broader scope appears to be a major part of the final game’s design, and director Naoki Hamaguchi has now suggested that seeing everything Revelation has to offer will require more than a single run.

Naoki Hamaguchi discusses ending the FF7 Remake trilogy, its Switch 2 port, and delivering the finale fans deserve.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Will Require Multiple Playthroughs to See Everything

During a recent gameplay demo at Tokyo Game Show, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that a single playthrough of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation should contain roughly the same amount of content as Rebirth, which already takes about 50 hours for the main story alone. However, players will not be able to experience everything the game has to offer in one run, as branching choices and other variations leave some quests, rewards, and scenes unavailable for the rest of the playthrough. Still, that doesn’t mean players must finish the game several times to reach its conclusion, as Square Enix has previously confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has one definitive ending regardless of the choices made along the way.

Player choice appears to be a major reason for the added replayability. Hamaguchi has explained that Square Enix wants players to have more freedom over the content they pursue, while some decisions can alter the path taken toward the game’s fixed ending. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is also expanding the flexibility of its party system, letting players choose which party member to control in certain side quests, with some outcomes and interactions changing depending on that choice. That could make subsequent runs less about repeating an identical adventure and more about discovering interactions and variations that were unavailable the first time around. It remains unclear exactly how easy it will be to revisit those alternatives after completing the game, but Hamaguchi has made clear that those variations exist.

Anyone determined to explore absolutely everything could therefore be facing a substantial time commitment. Hamaguchi has estimated that checking every asset and element from beginning to end could easily push a playthrough beyond 100 hours, though that shouldn’t be treated as the expected runtime for every player. The director reportedly completed Revelation 46 times during development, but he explained that many of those runs focused on specific elements, sometimes skipping combat or other portions of the game to concentrate on what needed testing. With one run already comparable in size to the massive Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, seeing every branching variation sounds like it could definitely increase the amount of time completionists spend with the finale.

That approach may prove divisive among players who already found Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth overwhelming, but Square Enix appears aware of that concern. Hamaguchi has said the team has worked to make optional activities feel more genuinely optional, and Square Enix is even adding an option to automatically raise the party to the recommended level at certain points, specifically for players who want to focus on the main story without engaging heavily with side content. Those who simply want to complete Cloud’s story should still be able to do so in one run, while players who want to see the full breadth of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation should expect to return for additional playthroughs after the credits roll.
