While all eyes are currently on the PS Plus free games for October 2026 before their addition, it’s worth noting that the first PS Plus Extra release for the month has already been confirmed. And it’s a solid game, which may ease some of the pain points coming from PS Plus subscribers being unhappy with OCtober 2026’s Essential lineup.
As previously announced for October 6, the PS Plus free games include F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2. To say nothing about each individual game in its own right, they are collectively a weak selection because of their hyper-specific niches and lack of broad, headlining capabilities. The good news is that PS Plus Extra is likely to save the day, once more, for those subscribers.
At the most recent State of Play, Sony confirmed a short list of games coming to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium, not least of which included the day-one addition of looter shooter Mycopunk. Mycopunk had no 1.0 release date at the time, as it first released on PC in Early Access, and so fans were left waiting for its confirmation. Now, Mycopunk has confirmed its October 20 release date, which obviously marks the first major wave of PS Plus Extra games for the month, too.

For the uninitiated, Mycopunk is a mission-based co-op looter shooter from Pigeons at Play and Devolver Digital, putting players in control of a squad of robot rejects sent to investigate a planet-wide fungal catastrophe. Players can tackle missions alone or with up to four players, using an arsenal of futuristic weapons and power tools that can be extensively modified through a grid-based upgrade system. New mods earned during missions can be mixed, matched, and stacked to create highly specialized builds, with options ranging from support-focused characters to weapons with unusual combinations of abilities. Mycopunk also features multiple regions and missions, enemy drops that can be stolen by other enemies, and an orbital drop-ship that serves as a hub between missions.
Mycopunk has been received very positively on Steam, for those curious, with 91% of more than 3,000 reviews rated positive, giving it a Very Positive overall rating. In general, players praised Mycopunk‘s fast-paced FPS combat, extensive weapon customization, co-op gameplay, and sheer variety of upgrade combinations, while the game’s intentionally chaotic humor and distinctive sci-fi setting also contribute to its appeal. It bears repeating that this was all while Mycopunk was in Early Access, with its full launch (including on PS5 and PS Plus) now being scheduled for October 20.

If Mycopunk is the main headliner of PS Plus Extra, then it’s a solid headliner—something that F1 25, Hunt, and Earth Defense Force all lack as Essential games. Still, taken as a whole, the PS Plus Monthly Games for October 2026 have potential at the very least.
