For Better or Worse, Control Resonant Looks More Like Gravity Rush 3 Than a Remedy Game

For Better or Worse, Control Resonant Looks More Like Gravity Rush 3 Than a Remedy Game

Sony’s newest State of Play showcase was jam packed with some great stuff. Between the AAA John Wick game, a fresh look at 007 First Light, God of War: Sons of Sparta shadow dropping, and a release date for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, it was one of Sony’s strongest showcases in a long time. All of those games were exciting enough, but the title that grabbed my attention the most was a sequel that is one of my most anticipated releases of the year: Control Resonant. I’m a huge Remedy Entertainment fanatic. The connected universe of Control and Alan Wake is some of the most inventive storytelling happening in gaming right now, so Control Resonant is a must-play for me.

When it was first announced at last year’s Game Awards, I was surprised to see how much harder the sequel was leaning into action. Control definitely had plenty of action-heavy moments, but it still kept it balanced with a slow-burn mystery. Sony’s State of Play confirmed that Control Resonant is turning everything up to the next level when it comes to action. Don’t get me wrong, I love action-heavy games. Control Resonant feels like a shocking departure, though. I’m still incredibly excited, but it’s starting to feel more like a long-lost Gravity Rush entry than part of the Remedy extended universe.

Control Resonant Looks Like the Third Gravity Rush Game That Never Happened

Gravity Rush 2 came out in 2017, and it doesn’t look like a third chapter will be announced any time soon. The Gravity Rush series had some incredibly fun gameplay at the time, and it looks like Remedy has been taking notes. For those who aren’t familiar, Gravity Rush follows a protagonist who has the ability to manipulate gravity. This gives her the ability to fly around and walk on walls, which opens the door to some seriously cool combat scenarios. As soon as Remedy showed off Control Resonant‘s gameplay at the State of Play, I immediately thought of Gravity Rush.

Control Resonant‘s Lead Gameplay Designer, Sergey Mohov, gave a rundown of protagonist Dylan’s abilities and even confirmed that his gravity-defying moves were caused by “Gravity Anomalies.” These allow Dylan to play around with physics in a world that doesn’t follow the natural order of things. Experimenting with gravity in a metropolitan setting is taking a page right out of the Gravity Rush playbook. It’s a fascinating direction for the Control sequel to go, but there is also the risk that it feels out of place in the larger Remedy universe.

Control Resonant is Shaping Up to Be Remedy’s Most Action-Packed Game Yet

Over the years, Remedy has had no problem combining action with beautifully eye-catching style. Max Payne‘s Bullet Time mechanic was a game-changer, and Control‘s blend of gunplay and supernatural powers made its sweat-inducing moments feel like a fast-paced paranormal power fantasy. Control Resonant seems to be laying its foot down hard on the gas pedal in that regard. This could quickly make the sequel feel detached from its predecessor, with the heathbars and melee combat creating a noticeably different vibe for the game. Thankfully, Control Resonant still looks like it has plenty of the hallmark features that make a Remedy game so special.

Dylan’s weapon in Control Resonant is called the Aberrant. It’s a melee weapon that can shapeshift into a variety of different forms that suit unique play styles. So far, Remedy has showcased the Aberrant taking the form of a hammer, fist, scythe, and blades, but there are more that have yet to be revealed.

Control Resonant’s Mind-Bending Visuals Feel Right at Home in the Remedy Universe

While Control Resonant looks a lot more action-packed than usual, the game stays true to the developer’s love for out-of-this-world and imaginative art direction. Whether it’s character design or set pieces, Remedy knows how to take the mundane real world and turn it into a paranormal maze. Control Resonant‘s physics-defying New York City repurposes ordinary buildings and transforms them into a supernatural obstacle course that encourages players to flex their creativity when getting from Point A to Point B. Every Remedy game has something special about it, and Control Resonant‘s blend of puzzle-like combat and even wilder visuals than its predecessor is bound to create a unique atmosphere. Control Resonant may be one of Remedy’s most visually jaw-dropping games yet, and that’s saying a lot.

How to Prepare For Control Resonant

  • Alan Wake
  • The Signal (Alan Wake DLC)
  • The Writer (Alan Wake DLC)
  • Control
  • The Foundation (Control DLC)
  • AWE (Control DLC)
  • Alan Wake 2
  • Night Springs (Alan Wake 2 DLC)
  • The Lake House (Alan Wake 2 DLC)

Max Payne and Quantum Break aren’t fully considered part of the Remedy extended universe, but they both have elements that loosely tie them to the larger narrative.

The DLCs aren’t absolutely necessary, but they do help expand the lore more. So, for those who have the extra time to put into expansions, they’re well worth the effort. Control and Alan Wake 2 really helped set the larger Remedy connected universe into motion, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how Control Resonant plays into all of this. Control Resonant‘s story is still a huge mystery, and there’s no telling how Remedy plans on connecting it to the plot that has been slowly forming over the years.

There are still a lot of Control and Alan Wake 2 theories that have yet to be addressed, and Control Resonant could finally bring forth some long-awaited answers. Remedy has managed to build one of the most mind-bending universes that the industry has seen, and the developer can hopefully keep that momentum going with Control Resonant.

FBC: Firebreak was one of the most disappointing games of 2025, and Control Resonant has the chance to bring the developer back into the spotlight by being a much-needed win for the studio. The setting is compelling, the gameplay looks like a surprising change of pace, the visuals are stunning, and the story is probably going to get even weirder. Control Resonant may not have a release date set in stone yet, but it’s bound to be one of the wildest games of 2026 whenever it arrives. And while some may balk at the Gravity Rush-like gameplay, I’m open to giving it a fair shot.
