Former Perfect Dark developer Drew Murray is now reportedly working on Blizzard’s long-rumored StarCraft shooter. The purported hire adds another possible sign that the unannounced StarCraft title may be moving beyond early incubation and isn’t the only indirect hint of that being the case.
Blizzard has canceled at least two StarCraft shooters to date, both of them shelved throughout the 2010s. Speculation about yet another StarCraft-branded attempt at the genre has been circulating online since September 2024, when industry reporter Jason Schreier said in his then-new book, Play Nice, that Blizzard was once again working on such a game. Per his sources, the still-unannounced project is being led by Dan Hay, a Ubisoft veteran best known for serving as executive producer on several Far Cry titles.

Perfect Dark Developer Reportedly Joins StarCraft Shooter Team
The rumor has returned this week following Jez Corden’s report that industry veteran and former Perfect Dark developer Drew Murray joined Blizzard, possibly with the goal of working on the unannounced StarCraft shooter. During the latest episode of The Xbox Two Podcast published on April 10, Corden said he heard Murray joined the upcoming project, while noting he could not confirm with absolute certainty whether Murray was working on StarCraft or another Blizzard game.
Although his exact day-to-day responsibilities are uncertain, Murray’s recent move to Blizzard is corroborated by his LinkedIn profile, which identifies him as the company’s Associate Design Director as of January 2026. Prior to that, he spent more than 13 years at Insomniac Games over two separate stints. The latter ran from early 2021 to 2024, when he worked as Design Director on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and another unannounced project. That title was likely not Marvel’s Wolverine, which, while only formally revealed in 2025, had technically been announced back in September 2021.

After leaving Insomniac in late 2015, Murray spent about three years away from the industry before helping found The Initiative, the Xbox team working on the Perfect Dark reboot, which he directed. However, that role ended up being relatively short-lived. The Perfect Dark director departed the studio in February 2021 and immediately returned to Insomniac. Microsoft ultimately shut down The Initiative and canceled its sole project in July 2025, with reports indicating the game was still nowhere near completion even after seven years of development.
