Former PlayStation Exec Officially Comments on PS6 Release Date

The PlayStation 5 is getting old by console standards, but that does not necessarily mean players need the PS6 anytime soon—something recently emphasized by former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida. Reports indicate that it could be coming next year, with the PS6 likely having a $1000+ price tag, and that leads to the question of whether or not Sony should delay the PS6’s release date.

Console generations have traditionally followed a fairly predictable cycle, releasing around seven years, with manufacturers eventually introducing more powerful hardware once the existing machines begin to reach their limits. PS5 Pro already gave Sony an opportunity to offer a more powerful version of the current PlayStation generation without completely abandoning the original PS5, while developers continue releasing major games across the hardware. For many players, there simply is not an obvious reason to replace a console that still does what it was purchased to do.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida agrees, arguing that Sony should keep the PS5 generation going for as long as possible instead of rushing the PS6’s release date. When asked about the PS6 by The Verge, Yoshida pointed to the rising cost of components and the limited budgets of consumers as reasons Sony could consider pushing back PS6 next-generation hardware. More importantly, he says people are already “very happy using PS5 and Switch 2,” suggesting the current generation has not reached a point where consumers are demanding an immediate replacement.

That’s before even considering the economic factor and possible prices of the PS6, which is impossible to ignore. Yoshida notes that people have “finite budgets,” while the cost of components used in consoles and gaming PCs has continued to rise. A new generation would not simply mean asking players to buy another box under the TV; it could mean doing so at a time when the hardware itself is becoming more expensive to produce. If PlayStation studios can continue running major releases without forcing developers into severe compromises, there is a much stronger case for Sony to get as much life out of the existing platform as possible. Yoshida also points out that there does not appear to be overwhelming fan demand for dramatically more powerful hardware:

“I don’t think lots of people are asking for ‘more power, we need more power.'”

Yoshida does not believe developers are broadly demanding better hardware either. It can sometimes feel like the current generation has just begun when considering the truly exclusive PS5 games, and improvements in software, optimization, and development tools can potentially make the current hardware more capable without requiring another generational jump. The question is not simply whether Sony can make a PS6, but whether releasing one would work as well as it should.

None of this means PS6 is unnecessary forever, and the usual console-generation cycle suggests Sony will eventually move forward with new hardware. Yoshida’s comments instead make a case for not rushing it, so it remains to be seen if the PS6 hits in 2027 as expected or if the company holds back.
