Nintendo has officially announced the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Expansion Pass. While it comes with an uncharacteristically high price, the new DLC may actually complete the original vision for the game, which Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave developer Intelligent Systems had to abandon.

The latest entry in the long-running strategy RPG series launched exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17. Fortune’s Weave earned widespread critical acclaim, with its 90 average score on OpenCritic making it one of the highest-rated Fire Emblem games to date. One of its defining features is a campaign structured around four playable protagonists—Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda—whose individual stories intersect over the course of the game. However, Intelligent Systems previously revealed that Fortune’s Weave was originally designed around eight protagonist perspectives. The developer ultimately halved that number after determining that such an arrangement made the game excessively complicated.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave DLC May Revive Its 8-Protagonist Plan

The Most Ambitious Fire Emblem Game to Date Is Getting Even More Ambitious

The newly announced Fortune’s Weave Expansion Pass now appears poised to revisit that abandoned concept. Its third and most substantial wave will introduce new stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel, and Anatolia, four other prominent Flame Lords who already play important roles in the base game. Nintendo has not explicitly confirmed that these Fortune’s Weave characters are the four protagonists removed during development, nor has it described their upcoming stories as full campaign paths. Still, the matching number and the characters’ established prominence in the story make it plausible that Wave 3 is effectively backfilling the perspectives Intelligent Systems originally intended to include but could not.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Expansion Pass Roadmap

  • Wave 1 (available now): Four prototype weapons inspired by the Heroes’ Relics from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
  • Wave 2 (Holiday 2026): Aurora, Smyrnos, and Jurah become usable divine allies in battle, alongside new wearable outfits.
  • Wave 3 (2027): New stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel, and Anatolia, as well as new recruitable allies and classes.

Fortune’s Weave Expansion Pass Is The Most Expensive Fire Emblem DLC Ever

Also One of the Most Expensive DLCs Among All Nintendo Games

The seemingly vast scope of the Expansion Pass comes at a steep price: $34.99. For comparison, the Fire Emblem Engage Expansion Pass cost $29.99, while the Three Houses one was priced at $24.99. Switch and Switch 2-era Nintendo expansions have commonly landed somewhere in the $20-$30 range, although $34.99 is not unprecedented, as underlined by Pokemon Pokopia‘s three-part Expansion Pass that launched its first wave in early August 2026. That still places Fortune’s Weave firmly at the upper end of what Nintendo typically charges for post-launch content.

Whether that price proves justified will depend heavily on the scope of the full Wave 3 content. Nintendo currently says Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel, and Anatolia will receive “new stories,” without specifying chapter counts or confirming that they will function like the four existing protagonist paths. If all four receive comparably substantial campaigns, the DLC could add a significant amount of story content while bringing Fortune’s Weave much closer to its original eight-protagonist design.

More content would not necessarily be an unqualified improvement, however. Although the SRPG received strong reviews overall, the multi-protagonist structure that’s at the center of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has also attracted criticism for repetitiveness, particularly where different paths reuse many of the same maps and objectives. Some reviewers have similarly taken issue with the amount of resource management and other busywork required between battles. Four additional full-length paths built around the same structure could therefore magnify one of the game’s more commonly cited weaknesses.
