Fortune’s Weave May Have Solved Three Houses’ Biggest Story Problem

Fortune’s Weave May Have Solved Three Houses’ Biggest Story Problem

Fire Emblem fans got an exciting in-depth look into Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave during the recent dedicated Nintendo Direct, and the new chapter is already making a huge improvement to the way Three Houses approached storytelling. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave features brand-new protagonists, a time jump, new classes, and even firearms, making this new chapter one of the most intriguing yet.

The new Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave characters are named Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora, and there is also a fifth character named Eshmel who serves as the game’s ultimate protagonist in the story. Three Houses‘ trio of characters offered their own intriguing stories, but the biggest issue with this entry’s character approach was that players would have to start a fresh playthrough in order to experience all three. This isn’t the case with Fortune’s Weave, though, and it’s one of the most exciting features confirmed for the game.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Officially Reveals $120 Special Edition

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Dagdan Collection offers fans a treasure trove of extra goodies, but comes with a pretty spendy price tag.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Allows Players to Jump Back and Forth Between Four Characters

In Three Houses, players have to pick which path to follow early on in the game and aren’t able to see every side of the story in a single playthrough. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave‘s story takes a much more flexible path with its characters that could make its narrative even more fun to watch unfold. There is a far more dynamic narrative this time around that allows players to really play and experiment with how the game is experienced.

Fortune’s Weave players can bounce around between characters in a single game, which is great news for the fans of Fire Emblem games who were frustrated with the fact that seeing the full picture in Three Houses required playing through the story three different times. Multiple playthroughs can sometimes be a lot of fun, but unless someone is completely sold on spending tons of hours with one game, having to replay a story more than once can quickly feel more daunting than fun.

One of the most exciting details confirmed for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is that it marks the first time that the franchise has included guns. This is a huge change for Fire Emblem that will shake up the combat in a fascinating way. It’s going to be even more interesting to see if it becomes a new staple feature in future games.

Fortune’s Weave Lets Players Step Into the Shoes of Every Character, But There’s a Catch

It’s important to mention that Fortune’s Weave won’t let players switch between Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora whenever they feel like it. Fortune’s Weave‘s gameplay still keeps things contained in a way that stops the game from becoming too chaotic. Being able to switch characters at will would quickly get messy, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses‘ characters and houses at least don’t cause this kind of problem. In order to change characters, players will have to visit the hub area called the Pale Raven’s Perch, which will then allow them to choose which character’s story they want to jump into.

This approach to characters could potentially make Fortune’s Weave one of the best Fire Emblem stories simply because players can follow each character equally. Fans get to see the story unfold through four different perspectives without having to start over multiple times while trying to remember every detail from the last playthrough. Nintendo even confirmed during the Fortune’s Weave showcase that each character’s story can be experienced in parallel, which is bound to make for a more cohesive narrative.

Being Able to Play as Four Characters Is Exciting Enough, But Fortune’s Weave’s Fifth Protagonist Is the Most Compelling

One of the biggest surprises about Fortune’s Weave is that Eshmel is the actual true protagonist of the game’s story. Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora’s stories will have their own important narrative moments, but Eshmel’s role is the central focus of Fortune’s Weave. Time travel is going to be incredibly important in Fortune’s Weave, and Eshmel’s story was teased to be a big part of the game’s time jump. Eshmel has to go back five years back in time in order to stop Dagda from being destroyed by Balor, so it’s no surprise that they are the main protagonist with such a huge task on their hands.

Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora’s sections largely take place during the Heroic Games, and it looks like Eshmel will be taking center stage once their storylines have concluded. There are plenty of great time travel games out there, and Fire Emblem is no stranger to the concept, so it’ll be interesting to see how Fortune’s Weave sets itself apart.

The finer details regarding Eshmel are still being kept under wraps, but there are at least a few things that were confirmed at the Nintendo Direct showcase. Staying in line with the more modern Fire Emblem games, Fortune’s Weave will make Eshmel a customizable protagonist. Who the best Fire Emblem protagonists are is incredibly subjective, but the customization that has become so common in the franchise’s current era has been something that a lot of fans look forward to.

For fans who want to know even more details about the protagonists, each main character in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has had their Crests confirmed.

  • Eshmel possesses the Crest of Noa
  • Dietrich has the Crest of Lamine
  • Theodora gets the Crest of Gautier
  • Cai will have the Crest of Aubin
  • Leda has the Crest of Dominic

It’s not like Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora are bad characters by any means. A parallel narrative between four different characters is plenty to be excited about. However, Eshmel being confirmed as the true Fortune’s Weave protagonist that still carries on that customization tradition is bound to be a relief for the fans who were hoping to make the main character their own. Good character customization is a feature that a lot of RPG fans expect now, so it would have been surprising if Fortune’s Weave had opted for pre-made characters.

The wait for a new Fire Emblem game is finally almost over, and it’s going to be fascinating to see exactly how Three Houses and Fortune’s Weave connect. The latter continuing the former’s multiple character narratives would still have been great even if it required four different playthroughs, but the fact that each story can be experienced at once makes Fortune’s Weave that much more exciting.
