Square Enix has just announced that Octopath Traveler 0 is getting a free update later in 2026. This free Octopath Traveler 0 update will see the return of a base game boss who’s become bigger and stronger, and will see a new resident arriving in town, one who will be familiar to fans of The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.
Released back in December 2025, Octopath Traveler 0 took the free-to-play mobile spinoff Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent and overhauled it, removing its gacha elements and remaking much of the game to deliver a more premium experience. That extra effort seems to have paid off, with Octopath Traveler 0 earning itself a Top Critic Average of 82 on OpenCritic, and a recommendation score of 80%. GameRant’s own Josh Cotts was a little more lukewarm on Octopath Traveler 0, giving the game a 7/10 in his review and stating that although the game’s story pacing overwhelmed the gameplay, “there is a sincerity to this entry that stuck with me.”
Octopath Traveler 0 Is Crossing Over With The Adventures of Elliot
During the recent Octopath Traveler 8th anniversary livestream, at around the 1 hour 26 minute mark, Square Enix officially announced a free update that’s coming to Octopath Traveler 0 later this year. The first half of this update will add a “formidable foe” to the Monster Arena, one that’s returning from the base game “stronger than ever before.” Players will encounter this foe in both a Capture battle and then an Arena battle. While Square Enix hasn’t confirmed the identity of this monster, the silhouette shown during the livestream seems to belong to Amatsukami no Orochi, a celestial dragon that can be encountered in the Cove of Clouds sub-area of the Skies of Vanity.

The second half of Octopath Traveler 0‘s upcoming free update will see a brand-new resident joining the player’s town. In Square Enix’s official announcement, this mysterious new resident is described as “an ‘adventurer’ from another world.” Again, Square Enix hasn’t definitively announced who this new resident is, but based on the clue provided and the silhouette shown in the livestream, it looks like the titular protagonist of The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is joining the party.
For those unaware, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is an action-RPG made and released by Square Enix last month. While The Adventures of Elliot uses the same HD-2D art style that many of Square Enix’s recent RPGs have embraced, it features real-time action gameplay as opposed to the turn-based combat found in the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Triangle Strategy, and, of course, the Octopath Traveler series.
