Future Diablo Games May Release Faster Than They Have In The Past

Diablo isn’t a franchise known for frequent new releases, with only five games in 30 years, but that could change in the future.

In an interview with Variety, Diablo 4 executive producer and VP Gavian Whishaw teased Blizzard is looking to release more than five Diablo games in the next 30 years. While Whishaw dodged a question about whether a new entry in the series could be announced at BlizzCon 2026 in September, he did talk about Blizzard’s long-term plan for the franchise.

“It’s kind of complicated when you’re talking about titles that have been around for 20 years and people are still dedicated to and still playing and still going to get excited about new content,” Whishaw said. “I’ll say at a high level, I think over 30 years of Diablo, we’ve done five titles. So I would hope that over the next 30 years we do a few more than that, maybe we get some out faster.”

The interview comes after Blizzard recently held a Diablo 30th Anniversary Spotlight presentation, one that revealed a new class coming to Diablo 2, Diablo 4, and Diablo Immortal and more details about what to expect from Diablo 4’s upcoming second expansion, Lord of Hatred.

Blizzard president Johanna Faries in that same Variety interview teased there is “more behind the curtain” to be revealed at BlizzCon, and that in addition to more games, Blizzard is working on expanding its IPs like Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo beyond just video games. She said there are “near-term discussions” across almost every one of its franchises, and that Blizzard is discussing what format and creative teams are the right choice to bring Blizzard’s worlds “to new audiences in a high caliber way.”

“We want to be able to create new fans who may not have been with us for the past 35 years,” Faries said. “How we continue to engage Hollywood or film and TV in bigger ways is going to be, in the near-term, probably a big part of that recipe.”

Diablo 4’s Lord of Hatred expansion arrives April 28. When it does, it will completely revamp the game’s existing skill trees by adding new choices and removing passive skills. As for what to expect from BlizzCon, Blizzard is already teasing major news across its franchises, with recent reports indicating a StarCraft shooter may also be announced.
