Mario Kart is an all-time favorite franchise for many, and it is proof that racing games don’t really have to be insanely difficult to be entertaining. Of course, this doesn’t mean that every mode is a walk in the park, but even those who are not particularly skilled can easily have a great time, which definitely does Mario Kart a favor when it comes to growing its audience. It’s a formula that has worked well for the franchise, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Star Wars: Galactic Racer has to follow in its footsteps.
With that being said, Star Wars: Galactic Racer has decided to put a much bigger emphasis on the consequences of failing or improving one’s skills. This generally makes any victory feel more rewarding, and it is definitely an interesting direction, considering that modern arcade racers usually prioritize immediate entertainment over punishing mistakes
Star Wars: Galactic Racer Makes Losing More Than a Temporary Setback

No matter how great life is, everyone loses at Mario Kart at one point or another. It can certainly be frustrating, especially when the opponent suddenly gains speed right before the finish line, but at least losing doesn’t mean starting your entire progression all over again. Well, except when it comes to Knockout Tour, since it features eliminations that can actually bring your run to an early end. However, nothing in Mario Kart can lead to consequences as serious as failing in Star Wars: Galactic Racer. For example, if a player crashes too many times, this may end the entire tour, forcing everyone to regroup and start another tour. So even a small mistake could raise the stakes, which actually has the potential to make every win feel a lot more rewarding.

Moreover, although being fast is obviously important, Star Wars: Galactic Racer expects players to also understand the strengths and weaknesses of their vehicles as well. There are several classes of repulsorcraft, and each one of them has its own characteristics that people have to be aware of if they want to win. To give an example, speeder bikes can use Kinetic Burst to gain additional speed, but doing so makes them a lot more difficult to control. On the other hand, Podracers require a fine balance between speed and the use of air brakes, which can slow them down quite a lot. In other words, mastering one vehicle does not mean that players should stop trying to take their skills to the next level, which is all the more reason for victories to feel so great.
Roguelike Progression Gives Galactic Racer a Different Kind of Challenge
Star Wars: Galactic Racer also incorporates roguelike progression into its campaign, which allows players to choose between different events and routes. This means that their decisions extend beyond the track and what happens there. Without a doubt, this adds one more layer of complexity that makes the experience matter much more than most people are used to.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer features races across several planets in the Outer Rim, including Jakku and Ando Prime.
Additionally, vehicles can be customized with different parts, which can change their characteristics significantly and even provide more abilities. Some upgrades can carry over between attempts, so players won’t lose everything every time they lose. So it’s a good idea for people to really think about their builds, which is definitely a breath of fresh air in a world of traditional arcade racers.
Galactic Racer Doesn’t Need to Beat Mario Kart to Prove Its Point

It’s important to note that although many might consider Galactic Racer’s approach a refreshing change, this doesn’t mean that it necessarily has to outperform Mario Kart. To be fair, the two games might not even be targeting exactly the same audience, even though they both belong to the arcade racing genre. They generally prioritize different experiences, with Mario Kart mostly focusing on emphasizing accessible multiplayer fun. In contrast, we have Galactic Racer that is all about long-term improvement, which, if we have to be honest, is just not everyone’s cup of tea. On the other hand, not everybody who wants to play Star Wars: Galactic Racer will be required to commit to its campaign.
The game has other modes as well, including Arcade, Scenario, and competitive multiplayer modes, which is generally a strategy that aims to offer more flexibility when it comes to how people can experience its racing. These additional modes could make the game’s demanding mechanics more approachable without necessarily making the entire game significantly easier. This is a great example of how a title can compromise without actually having to compromise. Moreover, not every racing game is obliged to make winning equally achievable for everyone, and there’s certainly room in the genre for games like Galactic Racer. Maybe it could even prove that making victory harder to achieve is the better approach after all, because the challenge is exactly what makes most achievements meaningful and enjoyable.
