Warner Bros. Games and HBO have just officially announced a new video game adaptation of the hit fantasy drama franchise Game of Thrones. This upcoming Game of Thrones adaptation is a free-to-play strategy game for iOS and Android devices titled Game of Thrones: Dragonfire.
Though it uses the wider Game of Thrones title, Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is primarily based on House of the Dragon, a spinoff prequel show that debuted in 2022. This show takes place nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones Season 1, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, and follows the events of “The Dance of Dragons,” a brutal war of succession among the Targaryens. While House of the Dragon hasn’t made quite the same cultural impact as Game of Thrones, it’s still received some critical praise and has been nominated for almost 50 awards, including a handful of Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards.
Sorry, But the Best HBO Show Isn’t Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is widely considered HBO’s best offering, but a 24-year-old drama actually deserves to take that title.
Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is a Free-to-Play Mobile Strategy Game
Announced on April 7, Game of Thrones: Dragonfire will be a free-to-play “modern, approachable social strategy experience where tactical warfare, territorial expansion, and the unrivaled power of dragons combine to redefine how players battle for control of the Seven Kingdoms.” The game will feature a tile-based system in which players will build their stronghold and use the surrounding resources to upgrade their base and forces. While Dragonfire is heavily inspired by the events of House of the Dragon, it will feature a new narrative in which players assume the role of a Valyrian descendant tasked with hatching and raising their own pack of dragons. Along with meeting familiar faces from the HBO prequel show, players will ally themselves with original characters and form alliances with other real-world players.
Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is being developed by Warner Bros. Games Boston, a studio first founded in 1994 under the name CyberSpace. Before it was rebranded to WB Games Boston in November 2018, the studio worked on games like Asheron’s Call, Dungeons and Dragons Online, The Lord of the Rings Online, and Infinite Crisis, all under the name Turbine Inc. The studio’s last release was Game of Thrones: Conquest, another free-to-play mobile strategy game set in HBO’s fantasy universe.
