Game of Thrones is getting another mobile game with Game of Thrones: Dragonfire. This time around, this free-to-play mobile spin-off is tied directly to House of the Dragon. While House of the Dragon may not be seeing the same heights as the main Game of Thrones series did, it has still managed a solid level of popularity. So, it only makes sense for Warner Bros. to opt for another game centered around the fantasy franchise. The main issue, though, is that it’s once again exclusive to mobile audiences.
I want to be clear that I have nothing against mobile games. Over the years, I’ve played my fair share of them. However, Game of Thrones is a franchise that is capable of much more than what mobile games allow. Games of Thrones‘ lore is seemingly the perfect recipe for a vast open-world RPG, so it’s confusing as to why that hasn’t happened yet. All the pieces are there; Warner Bros. just hasn’t put the puzzle together for some reason.
Game of Thrones: The Mad King Prequel Premieres This Summer
Game of Thrones: The Mad King, the prequel based on the works of George R. R. Martin, is coming to Stratford-upon-Avon’s Royal Shakespeare Theater.
Game of Thrones Has Plenty of Mobile Games, So It’s Time for a Full-Blown RPG Experience
A List of Mobile Game of Thrones Games
- Game of Thrones Ascent
- Game of Thrones: Conquest
- Reigns: Game of Thrones
- Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming
- Game of Thrones: Slots Casino
- Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall
- Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows
- Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition
- Game of Thrones: Legends
- Game of Thrones: Kingsroad
Granted, some of these titles are also on PC, but they are geared toward the mobile market. That’s a lot of Game of Thrones mobile games to sift through. Now that Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is introducing a new Game of Thrones game to the equation, it’s a bit of a bummer that it’s once again for mobile platforms. There doesn’t seem to be any end in sight for Games of Thrones‘ mobile endeavors, and it’s leaving a lot of potential completely unused.

Game of Thrones‘s lore is seemingly the perfect recipe for a vast open-world RPG, so it’s confusing as to why that hasn’t happened yet.
Telltale’s Game of Thrones game is a standout, but it also feels like it has been forgotten for the most part. Season 2 was canceled, leaving a really great adaptation lost in limbo. Instead of continuing to be a solid game, it’s now more of a reminder of what could have been. One upcoming title may help push Games of Thrones video games in the right direction, though.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a Silver Lining, But It Still Isn’t Enough
One game seems to finally be breaking the mobile game cycle, and that’s Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. This upcoming game is a real-time strategy offering planned for PC, which is a solid step forward. It still isn’t fully capitalizing on Game of Thrones‘ full potential, though. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros‘ release date is scheduled for sometime in 2026, but an official date has yet to be announced.
There’s no telling when the game will actually launch, but it hopefully gets the ball rolling on a Game of Thrones video game that truly captures the feeling of living in its world. Mobile games can put a limit on what’s possible from a gameplay and graphics perspective. For a show that has maintained a major presence in pop culture, many of its game spin-offs simply don’t reflect that.
One game that has come close to crossing paths with Game of Thrones isn’t even attached to the franchise at all. Game of Thrones‘ newest spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, feels a lot like last year’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Developer Warhorse Studios’ medieval adventure proves that there is definitely a market for a larger Game of Thrones RPG. A Game of Thrones game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 seems primed to be a hit. Warner Bros. has already proven that open-world RPGs are a perfect fit for some of its other fantasy IPs.
Game of Thrones Should Look to Hogwarts Legacy for Guidance
Hogwarts Legacy is the kind of game that Harry Potter fans have been waiting for years to become reality. The wizard-focused RPG was one of the best-selling games of 2023. Now that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in the works and a new Harry Potter show is on the way, it’s only going to expand the franchise even more. Warner Bros. and HBO are clearly interested in evolving the Game of Thrones franchise as much as possible. Between the original book series, the main show, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, there is already so much material to work with. A Hogwarts Legacy-style Game of Thrones open-world game is just begging to get made at this point.
The chance to create your own character and align with one of the many Game of Thrones houses has all the makings to be a hugely popular fantasy RPG. Right now, there’s no official word on the Hogwarts Legacy sequel’s release, but it’ll be interesting to see what the feedback is once it’s here. If it turns out just as successful as the first Hogwarts Legacy, or even more so, then it just solidifies that Warner Bros. Games needs to jump on the opportunity that it has with the Game of Thrones brand.
Developer Cyanide released a Game of Thrones RPG in 2012, but it’s definitely outdated by today’s standards.
Game of Thrones Can Hopefully Catch Up With Other Major Pop Culture Franchises
The franchise is still really popular, but it was on a different level a decade ago. Because of the controversy that surrounded the Game of Thrones finale, the series has fizzled a little over the years. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth pursuing as a larger game adaptation, though. Major franchises like Dune, the MCU, DC, and Star Wars have all had solid hits in recent years. Even Indiana Jones and James Bond are back in the spotlight. If all these franchises can succeed in gaming, it only makes sense that Game of Thrones can, too.
At the moment, it remains to be seen if a sprawling Game of Thrones open-world RPG is in the cards. Hopefully, it will happen, but only time will tell. Until then, waiting to see if Game of Thrones: War for Westeros gets the franchise out of its mobile slump and enjoying the spin-off series are all that fans can do.
