Officially coming in early 2027, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is confirmed to bring back Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons, as well as the Night King with the White Walkers, in an unnerving new scenario. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a new game set in the universe of Game of Thrones as fans know it from the TV show, complete with characters like Jon Snow and Jaime Lannister as leaders of their respective houses. Developed by PlaySide Studios, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is an RTS game launching on Steam next year.
The game features the three main houses from the book and TV series, namely House Stark, House Lannister, and House Targaryen. While Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has been delayed to 2027 after being announced for a late 2026 launch window, its appearance at Gamescom in August confirmed that the strategy title is indeed set for an early 2027 release. Recently, George R. R. Martin shared a sad update on his health and plans with Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the saga, and the book may require more time than expected to finish. While not a new story, War for Westeros does present alternate endings to the saga.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros shared a new trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showing that playing the game can lead to alternate endings in GoT, with the Night King or Daenerys Targaryen not only returning, but having a chance to sit on the Iron Throne. Season 8 of Game of Thrones was the worst in the entire series by a huge margin, based on reviews, and many fans believe it was rushed and written poorly. War for Westeros is not exactly a do-over, but it does allow fans to play as Daenerys Targaryen (alongside her dragons) or control the Night King and his undead army to prevail in Westeros against their enemies. The Night King’s and Daenerys Targaryen’s return in Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a big deal, as they come with unique abilities to command their armies and create new storytelling and gameplay opportunities for the series.

Game of Thrones‘ Jon Snow is returning as one of House Stark’s commanders alongside Arya, whereas Jaime Lannister and The Mountain are coming back for House Lannister. The game uses classic RTS gameplay, where players can obtain and manage resources like gold to keep their army growing, while using influence from controlled territories to boost their points. This is an asymmetrical game, meaning that each house or army doesn’t share the same abilities and units, but rather, each of them is carefully crafted to match those from the books and TV show. For example, it may not be Arya Stark who kills the Night King, but rather Jon Snow; vice versa, the Night King might win, eventually conquering the Iron Throne and bringing winter to Westeros.
As strange as it might seem, even years after the end of the TV show, Game of Thrones is still growing as a universe. Between the ongoing House of the Dragon and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the series still has shows going strong. Now, Game of Thrones: Conquest adds Dragonseeds, and more games for mobile are coming out or getting updates.
Considering that Game of Thrones‘ dragons went extinct with the Doom of Valyria, their presence in so many GoT games and stories is very important. After all, it’s part of the foundation of the series’ universe, which is why Daenerys was seen by so many fans as the ultimate queen — at least, before her story arc in Season 8.
