Gamescom Opening Night Live: Everything We Saw

Gamescom Opening Night Live: Everything We Saw

This year’s Gamescom just kicked off with another Opening Night Live showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley. We knew a few games that would be making an appearance in advance, like Final Fantasy VII Revelation and the new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but those two games cannot fill a two-hour show, so there was a lot more to see. If you didn’t get a chance to watch the show live, you can watch the VOD below, or keep scrolling for all the highlights.

Nodusfall

Kicking things off is a new dark fantasy game from Genshin Impact developer Hoyoverse called Nodusfall. If you’re looking for the company’s typical anime-inspired gacha game, you will not find it here. Instead, you get something that looks similar to a FromSoftware game. The game will feature cooperative play in which groups of four coordinate to take down powerful monsters.

Rainbow Six Tactics

Ubisoft is up next with a new entry in the Rainbow Six series, but instead of a shooter, it’s a tactical game similar to XCOM. You can make up a squad of returning Rainbow Six operators, then carefully plan and execute their infiltration into enemy territory. The game will launch next year.

Gears of War: E-Day

The Coalition was here with Gears of War: E-Day, which host Geoff Keighley made a point of emphasizing is an “Xbox console exclusive.” Almost as if that might’ve been part of the deal to get the game on stage as Xbox tries to rebrand as a company that cares about exclusives. Anyway, the story trailer shows what definitely looks like a Gears of War prequel. Buff people be yelling. Oh damn, aged-down Marcus Fenix is kind of uncanny. Anyway, the game’s coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S on October 6.

Ananta

NetEase showed off a new look at its anime-expired sci-fi/GTA-like game Ananta. It’s got a lot going on. It’s launching on January 15 on PC and PS5, and will be free-to-play.

Silent Hill: Townfall

Konami shared a new trailer for Silent Hill: Townfall highlighting some of the acting talent in the game, as well as the spooky shit fans will have to face when it launches on September 24.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

Next up is a new look at Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, which is coming out in two days on August 27.

Sea of Remnants

Sea of Remnants is a pirate game that combines elements of Tomb Raider with a turn-based RPG. It’ll be free-to-play and is taking preregistration requests on its official website.

Crimson Desert Enhanced

An updated version of Crimson Desert called Enhanced is out now, featuring new story moments and all post-launch updates thus far.

Tides of Annihilation

Next up is a new look at fantasy action game Tides of Annihilation, which now features Resident Evil Requiem star Angela Sant’Albano as the lead after Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 actor Jennifer English stepped down from the role earlier this year.

Lofsong

Unrelated Studio showed off Lofsong, which looks like a slightly darker take on Journey.

Mega Man: Dual Override

Now we have a new look at Mega Man: Dual Override, the long-awaited new entry in Capcom’s platformer series, which gave us a few glimpses of new boss Twinkle Girl. The game is coming out next year. Also, Pragmata is getting Mega Man skins later this year.

Rayman Legends Retold

Ubisoft is back with another look at the upcoming Rayman Legends Retold remake coming on October 1.

PUBG: Ded.Net

Next is a violent trailer for PUBG: Ded.Net, which will have a closed beta soon.

Once Human

Free-to-play survival game Once Human is available now on consoles.

Control Resonant

Remedy brought a new trailer for Control Resonant that is mostly just vibes, distorted environments, hack-and-slash combat, and some live-action cutscenes. The sequel is coming out on September 24.

The Blood of Dawnwalker

Dark fantasy action RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker is up next and these guys just be tearing each other apart, and then there’s some fucking in there somewhere. The game is out on September 3.

Game of Thrones: War For Westeros

Next is new footage of the upcoming Game of Thrones strategy game War For Westeros, which features several characters and factions from the show and book series. It’s coming in early 2027.

Dust: Origins

Airship Syndicate, the developer of Darksiders Genesis, showed Dust: Origins, a new isometric shooter.

Exodus

After a bit of on-stage theatrics promoting Gamescom, we got a new look at Exodus, the Wizards of the Coast-published sci-fi RPG that is giving Mass Effect. It’s coming out in April.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons

Speaking of Wizards of the Coast, Resident Evil Village star Maggie Robertson took the stage to talk about Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons. As the title implies, it will follow a warlock named Kaatri (played by Tricia Helfer) and her patron, Tasha (played by Robertson), with the player using magical powers throughout. No doubt the two will be navigating a complicated relationship while taking advantage of one another. The powers the player has seem pretty sick; there’s a moment where Kaatri swaps places with an enemy as a monster lashes out at them, allowing her to escape damage and put a foe in her place. That’s only one of several abilities we see in the extended demo. Game looks neat and is coming in 2027.

1001 Threads of Mizan

MBC Game Studio is debuting 1001 Threads of Mizan, a three-player co-op game based on One Thousand and One Nights. It’s coming in 2027.

Silver Palace: House of Greed

Dark fantasy really seems to be a theme of the night, with Silver Palace‘s House of Greed multiplayer mode giving the RPG an almost horror vibe.

Monster Hunter: Outlanders

Capcom is up once more with Monster Hunter: Outlanders, an upcoming mobile game that showed off a brief cinematic and not much else.

Metro 2039

4A Games revealed a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039, and talked about the game’s central themes of the the effects of war while gesturing at the Ukrainian studio’s struggles creating the game amidst the Russian invasion.

Hitman

Snoop Dogg is playing the next Elusive Target in Hitman: World of Assassination. The new content is available for free from August 27 to September 26.

Aion 2

Fantasy MMO Aion 2 is coming to PC on October 5.

Afterworld

Post-apocalyptic sci-fi game Afterworld was next with a lengthy cinematic trailer.

Petit Planet

Hoyoverse returns with something a little more recognizably its style in city builder Petit Planet, coming to mobile devices later this year.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2

After a Mewgenics musical performance, we got the launch trailer for co-op shooter Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2. Game’s out now on most platforms, coming to Switch 2 on September 29.

1666: Amsterdam

Oh, we’re back to dark fantasy once more with 1666: Amsterdam. The game is out in Early Access.

Showa American Story

Next is a trailer for campy zombie action game Showa American Story, which looks like a cross between Dead Rising and Yakuza.

Road Kings

Road Kings, a truck simulator, is coming in March.

Stage Tour

For the rhythm sickos, Stage Tour, the Guitar Hero-esque game featuring music by artists ranging from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Olivia Rodrigo, is coming on December 10.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour

Sega is next with a trailer for Crazy Taxi: World Tour’s multiplayer mode, in which up to four players race around the game’s maps. World Tour is coming in 2027.

Turok Origins

Next was a new trailer for Turok Origins. The game launches next spring.

Gravhounds

Octopus Panic, a studio made up from folks who worked on Halo and Battlefield, showed the debut trailer for Gravhounds, a shooter and survival game about super-soldier dogs. I couldn’t have been less in, but as soon as I saw the good boys, I was in. It’s coming to early access later this year.

Lego: Skylines

A new Lego city builder is coming called Lego: Skylines. We didn’t see much of it in terms of gameplay, but if you’ve ever made a town out of Lego before, you probably get the idea.

Transport Fever 3

Speaking of city building and management, Transport Fever 3 is coming on September 29.

Exterminauts

Next up is sci-fi shooter Exterminauts, which has you and friends taking out a bunch of aliens of different shapes and sizes.

Path of Exile 2

Isometric fantasy action game Path of Exile 2 got a trailer and it’s finally leaving Early Access and getting a 1.0 launch on December 11.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is getting a modern remake 27 years after its original 1999 launch. Ubisoft says it it will be “faithfully” recreated for modern hardware.

No Law

No Law, an open-world first-person RPG, is a new cyberpunk action RPG. It looks pretty sick, to be honest, if you’re looking for something similar to Cyberpunk 2077.

Project Zeta

Next up is hero PvP game Project Zeta. It certainly looks like one of those.

Gotta be real, a lot of these games are starting to blend together.

Cinder

And we’re back to spooky shit with tactical shooter Cinder. All we saw was a cinematic trailer of monsters, gory medical procedures, and a squad of shooters who try and fail to apprehend a monstrous lady who is typing shit and monologuing.

Ontos

Okay, this at least caught my attention after a bunch of games that look the same. Ontos is a body horror puzzle game from Soma developer Frictional Games that’s coming in 2027. The game features actor Stellan Skarsgård, and Jacksepticeye will have an exclusive gameplay reveal for it on August 26.

Pony Island 2: Panda Circus

Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, the follow-up to the original 2016 retro throwback compilation action game from Inscryption designer Daniel Mullins, is coming out on April 27.

Zoopunk

Next is a new look at Zoopunk, the action game about anthropomorphic animals coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox. There’s a sword-wielding cat lady now.

There Are No Ghosts at the Grand

We got another look at There Are No Ghosts at the Grand, a “musical horror renovation game” coming to early access in 2026.

Roco Kingdom

Open-world multiplayer creature-collecting RPG Roco Kingdom is here to toss its own hat into the monster-taming genre, and I don’t see anything that looks too much like a Pokémon in here, which is nice. Its closed beta will begin October 27.

The Defiant

That was enough cute things. Back to war with a look at The Defiant.

Tarae: The Unbound

Next we saw yet another isometric action game in Tarae: The Unbound.

Like or Die

Sci-fi shooter Like or Die showed off explosions, tech-based traversal, and I guess streaming your death match? I guess that checks out with the name.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Okay, after all that, it’s time for the headliners. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is coming in spring 2027 on all consoles rather than starting as a PlayStation exclusive like the previous two games, and the new trailer shows Cloud and company dealing with Sephiroth, the incoming meteor, and the various Weapons they’ll face in the finale of the Remake trilogy. There’s no sign of the spirit of Aerith in the trailer, but I imagine that Square Enix is keeping anything related to her close to its chest.

The Witcher 3

Closing out the show is The Witcher 3, with a new look at both its Songs of the Past expansion and an announcement that the game is being remastered with updated visuals, combat, and improvements to the traversal mechanics. The remaster will be a free upgrade path for folks who own the original game when it launches on September 29.
