GameStop Issues Official Statement on Its Controversial Price Stickers

GameStop Issues Official Statement on Its Controversial Price Stickers

GameStop announced that its price stickers, which have been historically difficult to peel off without any lasting damage, will be much easier to remove going forward. GameStop claimed that the new price stickers would leave less adhesive residue on video game box covers compared to the outgoing ones.

Throughout the years, GameStop has been one of the most popular brick-and-mortar retailers for gamers to buy, sell, and trade various physical video games and accessories. GameStop has also hosted trade-in events to give customers a way to buy refurbished consoles and games on different platforms at a discount. The rise of online retail has led to a sharp revenue decline for GameStop over the past decade, which has resulted in store closures across the US. As part of its ongoing efforts to keep customers engaged, GameStop revealed that a big change was rolling out across its retail locations.

It’s Officially the End of an Era for GameStop

GameStop is ending one of its most popular and famous benefits that has aided gamers the world over for several years.

GameStop is Finally Making Its Price Stickers Less Annoying to Remove

In a tongue-in-cheek statement on Twitter, GameStop stated on June 23 that it was changing its sticker designs effective immediately. More often than not, games and accessories sold at GameStop have usually been marked by stickers that have been unsightly and difficult to remove cleanly. Additionally, stickers have also been placed on top of older ones due to price changes or multiple trades. GameStop also provided a screenshot as a point of comparison between the old and new stickers.

A copy of Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition for the Xbox 360 showed how much residue could be left behind on the old stickers. On the other hand, the sticker placed on a copy of Astro Bot showed how almost no residue was left after peeling off the price sticker from one of the corners. Additionally, the price is now more prominently displayed on GameStop’s new stickers. GameStop said that the new stickers would be easier to lift at the corners, which should leave less sticker residue than before once removed. To go alongside the sticker rollout, GameStop is running a promotion in which customers receive up to 20% bonus trade-in credit on any games that are traded toward the pre-order of any eligible new title releasing throughout 2026, such as Grand Theft Auto 6 or Marvel’s Wolverine.

GameStop jokingly added that the level of adhesive on the outgoing sticker design was not part of the company’s strategic vision going forward. Given that sticker adhesive and other markings can potentially affect the price of some rare and collectible games, GameStop’s change to its sticker design will ensure future trade-ins will not be difficult to clean up. In response to GameStop’s post, some users welcomed the change while others wondered what took the storefront so long to update its stickers.

The sticker redesign came amid a busy time for GameStop. According to a June 23 investor release report, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen reportedly gave up a $35 billion bonus payout as part of the company’s ongoing effort to buy eBay. The plan was originally revealed in January 2026, months before GameStop announced its plans. However, eBay rejected GameStop’s buyout offer, and said that the bid was “neither credible nor attractive” to the company.
