Gears of War: E-Day has shared a new campaign trailer full of brutal action and given a first look at a powerful new Locust villain. Gears of Way: E-Day is loading up for its October 6 launch, as expectations for the ambitious prequel keep rising among fans. Its latest trailer sets the tone for the Gears of War saga’s defining, yet most mysterious chapter.

As its name suggests, Gears of War: E-Day focuses on Emergence Day, also known as the time when the Locust Horde first attacked the surface of the planet Sera. Though fans have never played the events of E-Day, the series has referenced it in every mainline Gears of War entry since day one. In this way, Gears of War: E-Day is the origin story of one of Xbox’s most renowned franchises. Now, a new trailer delves deeper into Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago’s first encounter with the Locust 14 years before the original trilogy.

Gears of War: E-Day Unveils New Locust Leader Villain

During Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2026, developer The Coalition unveiled a new two-minute-long story trailer for Gears of War: E-Day, featuring snippets of cutscenes and in-game footage. Right off the bat, the trailer shows a new leader of the Locust, posing as the game’s main antagonist. The character seems to be relentless in its goal of eradicating humans and can be seen pouring Emulsion on a person mercilessly until they melt. Fans are already reacting positively to the violent Locust leader, with some comparing them to General RAAM and other iconic Gears of War villains.

Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago also take the spotlight, along with other members of the Bravo Squad. In this story, humans have no information on the threat of the Locust, but the squad must still save the city of Kalona and its people. At one point in the video, the Gears find themselves underground, witnessing the massive Locust army. The video also emphasises the story’s emotional impact and the deep bond between Gears of War legends Marcus and Dom, with the protagonists sharing a heartfelt pep talk.

With 14 hours of story content, Gears of War: E-Day’s campaign is the saga’s longest yet. Per the new trailer, the game’s tone is quite dark, in line with the struggles for survival against an unknown enemy. It will be interesting to see how the game approaches some unanswered questions about Emergence Day and the war against the Locust. Marcus and Dom are much younger as well, and may not be the same experienced Gears that fans know from the original games.

Gears of War: E-Day coincides with the franchise’s 20th anniversary, and Xbox has already set the celebrations in motion. Official Gears of War: E-Day controllers were revealed earlier in August, with pre-orders already available. Players will likely receive more trailers and reveals as the game’s release approaches. It is worth noting that Game Pass subscribers can play Gears of War: E-Day on day one, but Premium Edition owners can play it up to five days earlier.
