Ghost Of Yotei’s New Free Online Mode Is So Good I’d Pay Money For It

Ghost Of Yotei’s New Free Online Mode Is So Good I’d Pay Money For It

Earlier this week, PS5-exclusive open-worlder Ghost of Yotei received an update adding a whole new multiplayer experience, Legends. And just like its 2020 predecessor did before with its own Legends mode, Ghost of Yotei: Legends takes the phenomenal combat of the main game and reworks it into a one-to-four-player mystical action RPG. And I really, really like it.

On March 10, Sucker Punch added the previously announced Legends mode into Ghost of Yotei. It’s a co-op-focused, but solo-friendly, online RPG that features more magical and supernatural elements, powers, weapons, and enemies. And let me help you out with this tip: You can access multiplayer from the main game by pausing and hopping over to the settings screen.

What is Ghost of Yotei: Legends?

The main loop of Legends has you and up to one other player completing 10- to 15-minute-long story missions and getting XP and new loot for doing so. Once all three story missions in a chapter have been completed, you can take on the harder finale mission with up to three other players. Completing these missions unlocks the ability to replay them on harder difficulties, granting better loot and more XP, and letting your selected class (there are four to choose from) get more powerful. You can also partake in some survival missions, hop in with randos for extra rewards, and eventually, there will be a big raid to take on that will be added in a future update.

Legends is now available for all #GhostofYotei owners! ⚔️

To be clear, Yotei’s multiplayer mode isn’t the most innovative concept. I’ve played plenty of online games with similar structures to Legends. But the real star of Legends is Yotei’s incredible combat and gameplay. All of the moves and weapons, as well as plenty of extra stuff, is included in Legends. Dodging, parrying, attacking, swinging around, taking out fools with arrows, sneaky assassinations, rolls, you name it. All of that good, good stuff from Ghost of Yotei‘s main campaign makes up the foundation of Legends. And that rocks.

Legends, in comparison to the main game, is more action-oriented and built around blasting through missions with a few other players in 10- to 15-minute runs that can feature dozens and dozens of enemies to eliminate. Rarely did Yotei offer up this much concentrated action, and never with the ability to share it with some buddies. And none of the multiplayer elements get in the way of Yotei’s combat. In fact, they just make it even better. Being able to fling around quickly and throw a fallen enemy’s sword at a big guy is fun in Yotei. It is 10 times more fun to pull off in Legends because I’m often helping out a co-op pal in trouble.

A chill but exciting PS5 co-op experience

It’s also one of those co-op games where you don’t really need to communicate all that much, at least outside of the more challenging difficulties and missions. You and a crew of three other warriors can just plow through camps like a plague of locusts, carrying swords and spitting arrows. When someone goes down, the game alerts you clearly. When objectives need to be completed, they are obviously marked, tagged, and updated for all.

And all of this action and killing and co-op fun helps you level up the different classes, unlock new cosmetics, and improve your gear and weaponry. Bars go up. Numbers get bigger. Items get rarer. And you get to share it all with a friend or some random player. It’s nice.

I’m not sure it will hold my attention for months and months, as some other online games have, but considering this is a free update to an already incredible solo open-world samurai game, I won’t be complaining if I feel like I’ve done it all in Legends after a few weeks. And if Sucker Punch adds more, I’ll be back to enjoy Ghost of Yotei: Legends with my sword-swinging buddies.
