GOG's Classic Final Fantasy Sale Includes Fan Faves And Underrated Gems

If you’ve been meaning to revisit some of your favorite Final Fantasy games, GOG has a new sale you should check out. The online retailer is discounting several PC versions of some fan-favorite entries in the series by as much as 60%, and you can grab all five for $34. Not to mention, because they’re GOG releases, they’re DRM-free.

The PlayStation Era Final Fantasy games are well represented in this sale, including the original version of Final Fantasy VII, for those who just want to fully sink into one of the best games ever made. Join Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, and the rest of the AVALANCHE crew as they try to stop Sephiroth from crashing out so hard that he summons the devil, who is also a rock from space. For an extra dose of nostalgia, hook up a CRT to your PC and play it the way we played it back in 1997.

A less well-known entry that’s included in this sale is the Final Fantasy IV 3D Remake. This is the game that laid the groundwork for the modern Final Fantasy games like VII, VIII, and IX. You can see so much of the entire series’ DNA here. There’s a robust job system built into the story, so your characters will evolve as the game goes on, you’ll see your main character start as a Dark Knight and eventually become a Paladin with an entirely new model and moveset. If you want a taste of where the most well-known entries in the series got their inspiration, check out Final Fantasy VI; it’s impossible to play without stopping every few minutes to notice characters, worldbuilding details, or themes that become foundational details in future games.

Final Fantasy III is another hidden gem in the Final Fantasy series. And we’re not talking about the game that was originally released in the US as Final Fantasy III (which is actually Final Fantasy VI, don’t ask, it’s a whole thing). Here you’ll see one of the earliest entries that really digs deep into the magical crystals-and-chosen-warriors motif, a recurring theme in future games. The cinematics are redone in 3D for this version, so it’s not the full-on sprites-and-8-bit-graphics version that originally came out on the NES.

Rounding out the lineup are two of the most criminally underrated Final Fantasy games ever: Final Fantasy IX and the Final Fantasy VIII Remaster. In Final Fantasy IX, we see a charming departure from the modern fantasy vibes of VII and VIII, and see the series return to its roots–high fantasy swords, sorcery, and faceless wizards with adorable hats. To this day, it remains one of the most beloved and unique entries in the series.

Don’t even get me started on Final Fantasy VIII, though. They’re fighting words, but Final Fantasy VIII deserves every bit of the same level of attention and critical acclaim its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII, got. Not to mention, it’s such a visually distinct game that its influence can still be felt in games that hit store shelves just last year (There would be no Expedition 33 without Final Fantasy VIII). This is the remastered version with slightly improved graphics and 3D models, but the soul of the incredible original remains intact. If you’ve never had the chance to play it, now’s the time.
