Grand Theft Auto 6 Officially Confirms How Police, Wanted Systems Work

Getting away with a crime in GTA 6 could require considerably more thought than simply breaking the police’s line of sight and waiting for the wanted stars to disappear. Rockstar is introducing several interconnected systems that track what law enforcement actually knows about Jason and Lucia, giving players different ways to interfere with an investigation during and after a crime. GTA 6‘s police system could consequently make escaping feel less like waiting out a timer and more like figuring out how to remove the evidence that could lead police back to the player.

One of the biggest changes coming to GTA 6 is the removal of police and enemy markers from the minimap. Instead, players will need to use the Focus ability to detect police through walls and identify nearby threats. Crimes also have to be witnessed and reported before officers respond, with NPCs able to call the police, robbery alarms able to trigger a response, and stolen vehicles potentially reporting themselves through built-in trackers. This should make committing a crime in GTA 6 less predictable, since a player’s actions alone do not necessarily determine when the police arrive.

Miami Police Release New Official Statement Ahead of GTA 6’s Release

Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz releases a new statement ahead of Miami’s fictionalized appearance as Vice City in GTA 6.

GTA 6: Crimes Are Realistic, But Fun

As Vice reports, the new Heat system works alongside the traditional wanted stars and is designed to show exactly what police know about GTA 6 protagonists Jason and Lucia. Heat indicators can reveal whether officers have CCTV footage, descriptions of the characters, information about their clothing, or details about their weapons and getaway vehicle. Players can then deal with those individual pieces of evidence in GTA 6 by destroying security footage, changing clothes, hiding weapons, switching vehicles, or even separating Jason and Lucia. Splitting the two characters up during an escape can reportedly remove an entire wanted star in some situations.

The wanted stars themselves also provide more information in GTA 6 than simply showing how aggressive the police response has become. Solid white stars mean officers currently have a direct line of sight, while flashing white stars indicate that the player has broken that line of sight. Hollow stars mean a crime has been reported, but police do not yet have a description of the suspect. Red wanted stars indicate that the player has technically escaped the police but remains inside an active search area, while the highest wanted level can cause police to search across the entire GTA 6 map of Vice City.

Rockstar also demonstrated how these systems can interact when a GTA 6 store robbery goes wrong. According to Vice, the clerk was knocked out without being killed, CCTV footage was destroyed, and Rockstar attempted to find the store’s safe code. Someone had already contacted the police, however, forcing the robbery to be abandoned before officers arrived and surrounded the building. GTA 6 can also have police establish a perimeter around a recently robbed store in case the player returns, while police vehicles contain shotguns, assault rifles, and body armor. Stealing one of those vehicles is not an easy solution either, since every police car has a tracker.

The larger goal with GTA 6‘s police system appears to be making law enforcement and civilian behavior feel more reactive to what is actually happening. NPCs caught near shootouts will not simply run away in every situation, with civilians who cannot safely escape potentially crouching behind police cars, walls, or benches for cover. Combined with the Heat system and the different types of evidence police can collect, GTA 6 could give players considerably more to consider after committing a crime. Sometimes the smartest move in GTA 6 may not be getting as far away from the police as possible, but figuring out what they know and removing that information before it leads them back to Jason and Lucia.
