GreedFall 2: The Dying World is the upcoming followup to Spiders’ 2019 action-RPG. The first GreedFall was generally well-received by critics and gamers, and embraced as a sort of spiritual successor and inheritor to the space once occupied by Dragon Age and similar games. Featuring a blend of Age of Exploration time period realism mixed with darker fantasy trappings, GreedFall was an absorbing and more unique take on some of the more familiar RPG settings seen in gaming, and helped it stand out in a field that seemed to lack both the previous quantity of titles in the genre and their quality at the time. GreedFall 2: The Dying World will tell the next chapter of its tale and is currently set for release later this year.
As it will actually be a prequel, Greed Fall 2: The Dying World‘s design approach will also inform how it will relate and connect to the series’ existing events and elements via this framework. Given this direction, Spiders has a golden ticket with the second entry to expand on multiple aspects that will hopefully strengthen and expand its already extensively detailed characters and setting.
GreedFall 2 Has a Golden Opportunity to Improve Upon its Predecessor’s Most Lackluster Feature
As demand for it increases, one particular feature should receive more attention in GreedFall 2 after its lackluster reception in the original.
GreedFall 2’s Prequel Status Comes with a Wealth of World Building Potential
GreedFall’s Setting and Story
Set in a pseudo-European region called Gacane, colloquially known to its citizens as the Old Continent, GreedFall focuses on conflicts of colonialism and capitalism through a semi-fantastical lens, combining mythological monsters and other supernatural elements with its pseudo-historical leanings. An important plot point is also GreedFall‘s Malichor sickness, as in the first it threatens to destabilize society and pushes many to the brink of desperation. The disease was the impetus for main character De Sardet’s adventure to the newly “discovered” island nation of Teer Fradee to search for a possible cure, while dealing with the political and factional struggles present throughout the situation. All of these, and more, are ripe for The Dying World to further flesh out.
How GreedFall 2 Could Continue to Capitalize on its Excellent World Building
GreedFall 2 is stated to take place about three years before the opening of the original. Along with this, the story will switch the protagonist’s origins and perspective. The Dying World will see players in the role of a Teer Fradee native taken forcibly to Gacane, in a sort of mirror situation to the first game. GreedFall 2 could thus delve much more into the details, history, and lore of Teer Fradee, perhaps showing what life was like for its residents before the island was found by foreigners who attempted to exploit the land and its peoples. It also has a chance to greatly expound upon the nuances of the Continent, sending fans to previously unseen regions and/or focusing on various other cultures and organizations, such as the seafaring Nauts or the church-state of Theleme.
The narrative angle additionally opens up multiple avenues for its protagonist to potentially cross paths with important figures like GreedFall‘s De Sardet and Constantin, as well as possibly seeing previous companion characters make an appearance and play a part in the plot. Though GreedFall 2 being a prequel could present some challenges, it also comes with the upside of allowing Spiders to fill in many of the gaps and tantalizing hints in its setting by building upon the well-established material. GreedFall 2 may end up presenting the events of the original game in a new and much different light, while leaving plenty of room for future theoretical entries in the franchise. Fans will hopefully not have to wait too much longer to see what surprises and mysteries are revealed in the sequel.
