GTA 5: The Dark Mysteries of Ursula Explained

GTA 5: The Dark Mysteries of Ursula Explained

As a franchise, Grand Theft Auto has built a reputation for being filled with big mysteries and fun Easter eggs. Players can put an absurd number of hours into Grand Theft Auto games before coming across some of the series’ most bizarre and mind-boggling secrets. From Bigfoot to the Ghost of Mount Gordo, many mysteries in the series are often paranormal in nature, though one in particular seems so heavily grounded in reality that it becomes one of the most disturbing in all of GTA 5.

This particular mystery revolves around the NPC Ursula, as she’s more than an unpredictable in-game girlfriend. It’s highly possible that Ursula could potentially be a serial killer, and GTA 5 doesn’t really shy away from that being the main interpretation of the character. Ursula’s background is really dark, and the longer players talk to her, the quicker they realize that it’s better to keep her at a safe distance. Though GTA 5 NPCs don’t always stand out, Ursula is a character that’s really hard to forget, with her backstory and actions both contributing to how memorable she is.

It Looks Like PlayStation Has Secured GTA 6 Marketing Rights

PlayStation and Take-Two may have reached a marketing deal for Grand Theft Auto 6, if a recent interview with Take-Two’s leadership is any indication.

13 Years Later, Ursula is Still One of Grand Theft Auto 5’s Most Disturbing Mysteries

Players can actually go the entire game without ever running into Ursula, as she’s only found during the Hitch Lift 2 Random Event. Once she’s encountered, it’s clear that there is something off about her. The more she talks, the worse it gets. The information Ursula shares about her life hints at a sad and abusive childhood that has manifested into a deeply disturbed adult life that has more than likely led her to kill people. She isn’t the only NPC connected to a murder in the game, either. GTA 5‘s Leonara Johnson mystery is a sad and disturbing murder mystery that players can dive into, though this time around, Ursula is the perpetrator instead of the victim.

Franklin or Trevor are able to pick up Ursula. If Trevor is the one to pick her up, he can take her to the Altruist Cult.

Ursula’s Tragic Relationship With Her Mother is at the Heart of This Mystery

Like many serial killers, Ursula’s background and childhood are marked by abuse. According to Ursula, her mother would lock her up in a basement, shave her hair, and force her to dress like a boy and refer to her as “Johnny.” After Ursula’s mother died, she kept locks of her hair in her backpack that she always carries with her. The strangeness doesn’t stop there, though. On Ursula’s property, there is a scarecrow that is wearing her deceased mother’s clothing. This has led a lot of GTA players to theorize that she eventually snapped and killed her mother, recreating her likeness via the scarecrow as a way to cope. This alone wouldn’t exactly make for one of the best GTA theories, but the other details surrounding Ursula certainly add weight to her being a serial killer.

The Strange Fate of the Gardener and Unnamed Driver

There are two other people who Ursula confesses have died in her presence. She makes strange statements about the fate of her gardener, saying that he got sick and fell off a cliff. Obviously, that’s a pretty strange way to go. Ursula claims that the last person who picked her up while hitchhiking died by choking on his own hand, and, once again, that’s a really bizarre death. There are plenty of weird moments in GTA 5, but Ursula’s conversation points feeling more like confessions than small talk makes for one of the oddest experiences in the game.

Being a Serial Killer Isn’t the Only Theory About This Creepy NPC

Believing that Ursula is a serial killer is a pretty common conclusion for a lot of players, but there are also some who think she’s actually a witch or possesses some kind of supernatural power. One reason players have theorized this is because of what happens once she becomes a Booty Call after dropping her off at her place. When one of the GTA 5 protagonists hook up with Ursula, the weather immediately turns stormy. She sometimes even talks strangely about water, making way for theories of her being some kind of water witch that can control rain. The fact that she shares a name with the iconic sea witch from The Little Mermaid is something else that’s hard to ignore.

Also, she’s first found hitchhiking south of Mount Chiliad. This has ignited speculation that she could somehow be connected to the Mount Chiliad mystery, though this has yet to actually be proven. Mount Chiliad is by far the biggest GTA 5 conspiracy theory, and many players have tried to tie a lot of different strange in-game moments to it, with Ursula being just one of them.

GTA 5 Mysteries Like Ursula Raise A Lot of Questions About GTA 6’s Hidden Gems

Ursula may not be a major character in GTA 5, but running into her leaves a lasting impact. This level of detail in minor characters is what makes GTA games feel so alive, and it’s exciting to think about what GTA 6 could have in store with its NPC roster. Rockstar has already confirmed GTA 6‘s main characters, but there still hasn’t been much shared about the deeper world of Vice City and the state of Leonida.

There are expectations that GTA 6‘s map is going to be the biggest in the franchise, and that means it has to be filled with even more detailed NPCs that help bring the setting and story to life. Rockstar is all about immersion, so there are bound to be plenty of weird secrets to uncover while exploring the various areas. There are already expectations that classics like Bigfoot are going to return in the form of the Skunk Ape (Florida’s version of the cryptid). A new version of Bigfoot would be exciting enough, but the real intrigue comes from the unique side characters. With Ursula still out there, perhaps she’ll make a comeback in the upcoming game, dropping even more hints about her victims.

More GTA 6 News Feels Imminent

It’s now been a year since the second trailer dropped, and gamers are eager for the third. The next Take-Two Interactive earnings call is set for May 21, and that might bring forth a fresh update. It’s hard to say if a new GTA 6 trailer will come along with it, but any update that isn’t a delay is bound to be welcome. Right now, all there is to do is wait and see what May 21 holds. Once GTA 6 is finally here, though, it’s going to be a lot of fun trying to find the bizarre NPCs like Ursula.
