GTA 5’s Success May Explain Why GTA 6 Isn’t Launching on PC

The way Rockstar Games handled the PC release of GTA 5 may have ultimately impacted GTA 6, and could explain why the game isn’t launching on PC alongside consoles. Although PC gamers have been disappointed that they won’t be getting their hands on GTA 6 at the same time as Xbox and PlayStation fans, this detail may ultimately explain why that’s the case.

Many gamers won’t have to wait much longer for GTA 6, with the game cementing its November 2026 release date. Unfortunately for those who don’t own current-gen Xbox or PlayStation consoles, however, the wait will be substantially longer. To make matters worse, PC gamers haven’t been given any indication as to how long they’ll have to wait for the game to reach them. It may be a matter of months, but GTA 5 took nearly two full years to come to PC after it launched for consoles.

‘They Should Be Charging $200’ Analyst Comments on GTA 6’s Price

A financial analyst claims that they would gladly pay $200 to play Grand Theft Auto 6 and shares the main reason behind their words.

GTA 5’s PC Port and Rockstar’s Direction with GTA 6

In an interview with Kiwi Talkz, former Rockstar producer John Ricchio talked about the games he worked on, which include GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption. According to Ricchio, a PC build of Red Dead Redemption was actually in the works “very early,” but was ultimately pushed aside in favor of focusing on the development of then-upcoming GTA 5. GTA 5 was massively successful at launch despite only launching for consoles at first. Rather than having a bias against PCs, Rockstar’s logic hinges upon making a game a polished experience for consoles, and then moving on to a PC version, and it clearly worked for GTA 5.

Ricchio explained that trying to build a game for PC and then “shrinking” the game to run properly on consoles is difficult. It makes more sense for Rockstar to build a game for consoles first, and then worry about PCs after that. If nothing else, developing a game for specific consoles means developers know exactly what kind of hardware capabilities they can work with, whereas PC specs can vary so wildly that it’s not possible to test every single build possible to see if the game runs smoothly no matter what a gamer is using.

From the sound of it, Rockstar is still carrying this development philosophy on to this day. GTA 5 took close to two years to launch on PC after its release on consoles, and Red Dead Redemption 2‘s PC release took just over a year. Comparatively, the earlier games of GTA 3, GTA 4, and GTA: San Andreas only took about half a year each to get to PC after releasing on consoles. The developers will likely want to get GTA 6 out to PC players as soon as possible, as it will ignite another wave of massive sales for the company, but getting it right seems to be equally important. As a result, players may be able to expect to wait 1–2 years before GTA 6 reaches them on PC, if recent history is any indication.

Although the wait may frustrate fans, the reasoning is understandable. Most gamers would likely prefer to have a smooth experience playing the game for the first time with as few bugs as possible, and rushing the porting process or trying for a simultaneous console and PC release could make that impossible. There have been plenty of games from other developers that have launched in a rough state, including some that have been nearly unplayable on systems they were available for, like Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One at launch. After all these years of waiting, GTA 6 can’t really afford to let an unpolished experience reach gamers on any system it’s made available for.
