According to a new claim from a reliable source, Grand Theft Auto 6 is targeting a 60 FPS performance mode on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6‘s frame rate began gaining traction in 2025. At the time, however, most people believed that if a 60 FPS mode exists, it is likely going to be exclusive to the PS5 Pro.

In July 2025, a self-proclaimed insider claimed that Sony had partnered with Rockstar to ensure Grand Theft Auto 6 would run at 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro. According to the rumor, Sony even sent engineers to Rockstar to help make it happen. However, the latest claims suggest that the popular performance mode may not be exclusive to a single console model after all.

GTA 6 Is Technically the Cheapest Grand Theft Auto Game

Aside from inflation-adjusted prices, other financial data suggest GTA 6’s jump to $80 doesn’t necessarily make it the least affordable Rockstar game.

60 FPS Performance Mode for GTA 6 Is in the Works, Sources Claim

In a recent episode of the Polish podcast Rock and Borys, one of the hosts claimed to have spoken with a reliable source who is “very close to Rockstar Games.” According to the source, GTA 6 will feature two graphics modes: a 30 FPS quality mode and a 60 FPS performance mode. One of the show’s hosts, Borys Niespielak, is known for accurately revealing The Witcher 3‘s upcoming DLC before its official announcement. As a result, the hosts’ solid track record of uncovering industry secrets gives their GTA 6 frame rate claims more credibility than most previous rumors.

The Rock and Borys hosts also pointed to a previous GTA 6 listing on the Polish MediaMarkt website, which reportedly mentioned both performance and quality modes in the game’s official description. Since retailers typically receive these descriptions from official sources, many argued that the listing was enough evidence to suggest GTA 6 would indeed include a 60 FPS mode. However, as with most pre-release leaks, the information should still be treated with caution.

GTA 6’s Rumored 60 FPS Mode Might Come With a Catch

According to the Rock and Borys hosts, their source claims Rockstar Games is still working to find a technically feasible way to implement a 60 FPS performance mode. They added that, because of the challenge of maintaining such a high frame rate in a graphically demanding game like GTA 6, the mode may not be available at launch and could instead arrive in a post-release update. The hosts also claimed that the Xbox Series S currently supports only the 30 FPS mode, although Rockstar may not have completely ruled out a performance mode for the entry-level console yet.

Why Getting 60 FPS in GTA 6 Is a Big Challenge

Experts have previously explained why GTA 6‘s massive open world makes a stable 60 FPS on consoles difficult to achieve. Even a former Rockstar developer said GTA 6 may be better at the 30 FPS mode, as it allows the studio to deliver a much more detailed in-game world. While many AAA games achieve higher frame rates by lowering graphical settings, that approach may not be practical for GTA 6. Its dense world, filled with NPCs, rendered objects, and detailed environments, likely places a heavy load on the CPU as well as the GPU, which is harder to reduce through visual downgrades alone.
