The recent Grand Theft Auto 6 extended gameplay showcase has been followed by a sharp increase in PS5 Pro prices as availability tightens ahead of the game’s fall release. Grand Theft Auto 6 launches for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, making it one of the biggest remaining console sales drivers of this generation.
Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look on August 27, offering players nearly half an hour of in-game footage captured entirely on PS5. The presentation provided the most extensive look at the game so far, showing more of GTA 6‘s setting of Leonida, Jason and Lucia, vehicles, activities, combat, interiors, nightlife, and the overall scale of Rockstar’s newest open world. Rockstar describes the sequel as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series yet, but it seems to be coming only to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no mention of a PC launch yet, meaning some fans may have to purchase a new console to play at launch.
GTA 6 Hype Is Sending PS5 Pro Prices Soaring
PS5 Pro availability has become particularly strained following the GTA 6 Extended Look, with third-party sellers asking as much as $1,300 for a console that normally retails for $899.99. The situation is similarly severe in Europe, where Heise Online reported PS5 Pro prices climbing toward €1,300, roughly $1500 USD, as inventory became increasingly difficult to find. In the aftermath of the showcase, Best Buy and Target reportedly sold through their US stock, while PlayStation Direct remained one of the few major retailers offering the console at its normal $899.99 price, although its stock reportedly disappeared soon afterward. Third-party sellers on Amazon and Walmart were meanwhile asking around $1,299, while new PS5 Pro listings on eBay reportedly reached approximately $1,200. However, those figures do not reflect a true price increase, but rather inflated marketplace and reseller prices driven by scarce inventory.

The current console pricing situation does go well beyond GTA 6 simply driving a surge in sales and prices. Sony had already raised the PS5 Pro price to $899.99 in the United States before Rockstar’s latest gameplay reveal, while console manufacturers have dealt with higher component costs and other pressures throughout much of 2026. The recent spike instead appears to be a case of renewed demand colliding with an already constrained hardware supply. GTA 6 may be adding considerable pressure to the market, but the conditions that allowed $1,200 and $1,300 listings to appear were clearly already developing beforehand.
Signs also suggest GTA 6 may be influencing not just console shortages but exactly what console fans are buying. The PS5 Pro, in particular, seems to be attracting attention from enthusiasts looking for the strongest available PlayStation hardware, especially with GTA 6 confirmed to receive PS5 Pro enhancements, although Rockstar has not yet detailed exactly what those improvements will entail. The Extended Look certainly showcased the beauty of Leonida, which many fans will likely want to experience to its fullest.
There are still roughly two months before GTA 6 launches, leaving plenty of time for the hardware market to change. As the holiday season approaches, fresh PS5 Pro inventory could pull reseller prices closer to the normal $899.99 MSRP, meaning the recent $1,200 and $1,300 listings should not be treated as permanent pricing. At the same time, the rapid disappearance of retail stock following the Extended Look nevertheless shows how quickly PS5 Pro availability can tighten as GTA 6 nears its release date. With existing hardware pressures and one of the most anticipated games of all time arriving on November 19, securing a PS5 Pro at its normal retail price could become increasingly difficult as launch approaches.
