GTA 6 is giving players a ton of freedom when it comes to robbing stores, with Rockstar detailing how such a feature works in recent previews. Nowhere is that more evident that how GTA 6 is treating its interior locations. In short, players can attempt to rob almost any store they enter, while larger targets such as jewelry stores, banks, payday lenders, armored vans, criminal compounds, and full-scale heists can be highlighted on the map with an estimated payout.
Ever since the first trailer, it’s been pretty clear that protagonists Jason and Lucia would be committing a lot of robberies. The unknown question is why. Recent story hints for GTA 6 suggest they are on the run, committing crimes to help them make money, stay off the radar, and presumably pay back a dangerous someone with a lot of cash. Bigger jobs certainly help that, even as they become bigger problems for players to tackle, but there are plenty of smaller jobs too.
GTA 6 & Store Robberies
At the same time, as reported by Vice, every store robbery in GTA 6 can also present its own problems. The layout of a location, its entrances, security cameras, safe placement, employees, safe codes, and customers can all affect how a robbery plays out. Clerks, security guards, and civilians may fight back or otherwise interfere, potentially turning what looked like a simple robbery into something much more complicated. How players handle these changes, especially in terms of NPCs, impacts Jason and/or Lucia’s Criminal Profile in GTA 6, too. Robberies can be attempted alone or with Jason and Lucia together, giving players some control over who takes part in the crime.

Based on how police work in GTA 6 too, response times are going to be different based on location, how players play (violently and open, quiet and progressional, etc.). In short, every lever that Rockstar can pull to make each store robbery possibly play out differently, with a ton of variables, has been pulled. What happens after the robbery is another matter.
GTA 6 has three forms of money: funds kept in the bank, physical cash, and stolen goods carried in duffel bags. Banked money is safe and can be managed through the BuckMe app, while cash carried by Jason or Lucia can be lost upon death and has to be deposited at an ATM. Stolen goods cannot simply be spent, either, as players have to find a fence willing to buy them. Different fences specialize in things such as cars, drugs, and jewelry, and those contacts are unlocked as the GTA 6 story progresses. Fences are one of a few ways where the economy is designed to prevent players from earning millions of dollars by the end of the campaign, like GTA 5.

Story progression requires money, but so do other aspects of the game. In a way, the valuable stolen goods requiring a fence can temporarily block story progression, with the variety of store robberies ensuring that there are ways to pick up bits here and there, but that’s all intentional. Rockstar wants to encourage players to spend time on robberies and other GTA 6 activities to give major story events room to breathe, especially as Jason and Lucia’s crime spree ramps up in beautiful Vice City.
