GTA 6 Is About to Test How Much Realism an Open-World Game Actually Needs

GTA 6 Is About to Test How Much Realism an Open-World Game Actually Needs

Rockstar’s extended Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay sneak peek made one thing clear, which is that this is going to be the developer’s most ambitious game ever. Between Lucia and Jason’s relationship, the robbery system, and the sheer size of the map, Grand Theft Auto 6 is taking Rockstar’s special brand of realism to the next level. It’s also going to test the limit of what counts as too much realism, though.

Some of the best open-world games of the past few years have been trying to dive even deeper into realistic mechanics, and many gamers are expecting GTA 6 to be the apex of that trend. That’s a thrilling prospect, but there is a delicate balance that Rockstar has to achieve in order to keep realism from feeling too restrictive or frustrating. I’m confident that Rockstar has what it takes to hit those marks. However, it’s going to be fascinating to see how different kinds of gamers react to the amount of realism that the studio has teased for GTA 6.

Every Grand Theft Auto Game, Officially Ranked

With GTA 6 almost here, this is the best time to rank all of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto games. Which one is the greatest of all time?

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Realism Is Intriguing, But It Could Also Show That Lifelike Mechanics Aren’t Everything

Naturally, a lot of people immediately think that realism equals immersion. That’s understandable, but this isn’t necessarily always the case. Plenty of the most immersive games ever made have achieved this desired effect through atmosphere and world-building instead of gameplay mechanics. Realistic features don’t always need to be the key aspect that makes a world feel alive, and Rockstar has been well aware of this in the past.

Games by Rockstar all have a deep sense of realism, but the developer is also well aware that there is a limit. What’s so interesting about GTA 6 is that player expectations and over a decade’s worth of open-world evolution will test Rockstar’s formula in a brand-new way. The team at Rockstar has the difficult task of pushing the genre forward while also avoiding going overboard. This is far easier said than done, and the GTA 6 gameplay details that VICE recently shared are a great example of how much deeper Rockstar is going with its lifelike qualities.

A Look at Grand Theft Auto 6’s Confirmed Gameplay Details

  • Vehicle fuel management
  • Weapon storage
  • Restricting the number of weapons characters can carry
  • Vehicle security
  • Individual vehicle handling
  • Weight/muscle changes through exercise
  • NPCs reacting to open weapons
  • Dynamic traffic
  • More realistic money mechanics
  • Stolen goods need fences
  • Taking Jason and Lucia on dates
  • Dynamic robberies
  • Sleep affects characters
  • A wide variety of side activities

This is really just the tip of the iceberg, too. Leading up to GTA 6‘s deep dive, it was hard to imagine how Rockstar could one-up the realism of a game like Red Dead Redemption 2, but it’s already pretty clear that the devs have found several ways to bring more lifelike qualities to the gameplay. This leap into realism with GTA 6 is fascinating, because in some ways, it’s a far cry away from GTA 5.

GTA 5‘s gameplay and story could be downright cartoonish at times. Its exaggerated approach to satire balances out the realism in some ways, but it’s clear that GTA 6‘s gameplay is going to be a more grounded experience. Granted, the satire is still obviously alive and well in GTA 6. Rockstar steering away from GTA 5‘s over-the-top nature is a compelling change of pace that makes nailing realism that much more challenging.

After GTA 6 arrives, the next big question will be regarding GTA 6 Online‘s release date and how realistic it will be compared to the game’s single-player version. The original GTA Online launched a few weeks after GTA 5, but a recent report from Forbes’ Paul Tassi claims that GTA 6‘s online counterpart might not arrive for another two years. There’s no way to know for sure, but that would be a huge surprise.

I don’t see this as a bad thing at all. If anything, GTA 6 having a more grounded take on realism excites me, but part of me is still concerned about it being overkill with certain gameplay aspects. GTA 6‘s confirmed features are vast. As intriguing as each one is, not every gameplay element needs to have as much realism as possible. Thankfully, the gameplay content that Rockstar has cut from GTA 6 is a promising sign that the devs haven’t gone too far.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Cut Content Might Paint a More Promising Picture Than the In-Game Features

Rockstar recently revealed that there was once a grocery buying feature in GTA 6, but even the developers decided that this was taking realism a step too far. So, it’s a good sign that Rockstar was able to notice a clear limit as to what counts as too much realism. Rockstar made the right call in scrapping the grocery mechanics, because I could see that getting old pretty quickly.

GTA 6 separates in-game money into three separate categories: physical cash, bank funds, and stolen goods. If Jason and Lucia are killed while holding cash, that money can be lost forever if it isn’t deposited into an ATM.

Even when it comes to GTA 6‘s more in-depth lifelike mechanics, it seems like they are at least intended to enhance other aspects of the gameplay. For example, in order to make Jason and Lucia healthier, they have to go to the gym. However, players have to purchase a gym membership before that’s even possible. So, it provides a realistic hurdle to unlock this certain feature, but it has the benefit of not being a repetitive action like grocery shopping would be.

There are now only a few months between gamers and the GTA 6 release date, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how players react to the level of realism that Rockstar is bringing to the table. After over a decade of causing chaos in GTA 5‘s Los Santos, Vice City and the greater state of Leonida might feel like a huge change of pace. This has the potential to make GTA 6 not only one of the most realistic GTA games, but also one of the most divisive. Only time will tell, but GTA 6‘s more grounded systems could prove that realism isn’t the most important thing when it comes to crafting a believable open-world game.
