GTA 6 Is Finally Making Its Namesake Crime Matter Again

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to make serious waves on November 19, and many gamers are ready to see what Rockstar has been cooking up for so many years. The wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been filled with speculation and theories about its gameplay. Many were getting pretty antsy about Rockstar’s lack of updates, but the developer finally lifted the veil on GTA 6‘s gameplay via an extensive 26-minute preview that premiered on Netflix. The gameplay preview gave insight into plenty of classic GTA gameplay features, but one thing that was made clear is that this chapter will be far more realistic than its predecessors, especially when it comes to stealing cars.

GTA 6‘s car stealing mechanics are going deeper than they ever have before, and it’s bound to be a game-changer for the series. Despite the franchise’s name literally referencing car theft, stealing cars in GTA has been surprisingly easy. Things like the GTA 6 Wanted System and how NPCs respond to Jason and Lucia are expected to be more lifelike, so it only makes sense that car theft boasts that same feeling. It’s going to be a big leap forward for the series that could make it the most immersive GTA game yet.

GTA 6 Officially Confirms First Voice Actor

Despite the secrecy surrounding GTA 6’s cast, one of its characters now has an officially confirmed voice actor, though fans aren’t surprised.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Car Stealing Mechanics Mean That Rockstar’s Crime Series Finally Lives Up to Its Name

Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson recently spoke with IGN about exactly how in-game car theft has been changed to make GTA 6 gameplay that much more immersive and rewarding. Traditionally, stealing a car in GTA was simply done with the press of a button. Those days are now long gone, because Rockstar has added some intriguing new layers to how players will have to approach cars they wish to steal.

Instead of just pressing a single button, each car in GTA 6 will have specific features that determine how Jason and Lucia will be able to enter a vehicle. In some cases, certain cars won’t be able to be accessed until later in the game when players have acquired certain tools. Fans now have to be strategic with car theft, and Rob Nelson’s comments about the new system sound promising.

We have put some layers of stratification into the vehicles. Previously, you could just press triangle to automatically hotwire and steal any vehicle that you wanted and take off. We felt like that left a lot of potential gameplay on the table in terms of progression and decision-making for players. So now, you start off the game and there are certain parked cars that are not accessible to you until you get a bit further along with the story and you acquire certain tools to get into them, but you can always carjack any driver you see.

Now, stealing cars has become part of the game’s progression. It sounds like a brilliant way to expand upon GTA‘s core themes that also gives gameplay a more in-depth edge that the past entries were missing. Granted, every GTA game has had its own spin on staple features that keep the experience fun, but GTA 6‘s approach to car theft feels like a true step forward. In order to figure out how to break into each car, players will have to utilize an in-game app called WAINK to scan cars and gain details about their features.

How GTA 6’s WAINK App Works

  • Players scan cars with the app to determine the difficulty level for stealing
  • Each car will have a security tier and value
  • Newer cars require players to duplicate electronic keys
  • Other cars will just need a slim jim to be broken into

Cars have evolved a lot since GTA 5, and Rockstar has clearly taken this into consideration with GTA 6. Newer vehicles are far more computerized, so Jason and Lucia are going to have to work extra hard to get into these kinds of cars. What’s even more fascinating is that newer cars could be equipped with interior trackers that sense when players drive them over the speed limit, which alerts cops. This could be more frustrating for players who love driving in GTA with reckless abandon, but nearly everything that Rockstar has shared about GTA 6‘s world makes it clear that the ultimate goal is a story and gameplay experience that feels truly lived in.

GTA 6’s Enhanced Realism Is a Big Risk on Rockstar’s Part, But It Could Ultimately Pay Off

There is such a thing as too much realism in video games, but Rockstar has hopefully found the balance between realism and fun. Rockstar recently revealed that there was once a GTA 6 grocery mechanic, but it ended up being cut for leaning too hard into realism. The devs realizing that a forced grocery system would take things too far is a promising sign that the proper balance has been nailed. Of course, only time will tell, though.

Money is another feature that is getting a big overhaul. In-game funds will be divided into three categories; cash, loot, and bank funds. Getting killed while having cash on hand will also cause players to lose that money if it hasn’t been deposited into an ATM.

In many ways, GTA 6 sounds like it’s a far cry away from GTA 5. The latter was fantastic, but it was also an over-the-top crime romp that felt outlandish at times. Rockstar’s newest entry will still potentially have those moments, but the GTA 6 details that have been shared are teasing a GTA experience that is more akin to Red Dead Redemption 2 and its realism.

That could potentially be divisive, but it’s also deeply intriguing. Red Dead Redemption 2‘s open world was a great demonstration of how a large-scale game’s storytelling can be just as strong as the world design. This is hard for open-world games to achieve, and even some GTA games have struggled to perfectly blend the two.

GTA 6‘s story looks like it has the potential to be a different situation, though. Between the ongoing inspiration from the GTA franchise’s crime-filled, action-packed moments and Red Dead Redemption 2‘s story and gameplay depth, GTA 6 has the potential to be something truly special. It’s hard for a game like this to live up to expectations, but if any developer is able to pull that combination off, it’s Rockstar.
