GTA 6 Officially Details Car Stealing Features

Grand Theft Auto has always made stealing cars look deceptively easy, but GTA 6 is setting out to change that. Across nearly three decades of Grand Theft Auto games, walking up to a vehicle and pressing a button has usually been enough to turn someone else’s ride into a temporary getaway car. GTA 6 is set to preserve that familiar part of the series, but Rockstar is also giving cars different levels of security, forcing players to think more carefully about which vehicles they target and how they get inside them.

Cars will no longer simply be disposable tools for getting from one side of Leonida to another, as their value, security, and potential usefulness can all factor into the decision to steal one. GTA 6 will still allow players to quickly take less-secure vehicles, including older cars that can be broken into with relatively simple methods, but more expensive vehicles will require additional tools and planning. The result could make something as routine as finding a getaway car feel like an actual decision instead of an automatic interaction.

GTA 6 Officially Details Open-World Features

Rockstar Games details some of the open-world features players will enjoy in the upcoming release of GTA 6.

How Car Theft Works in GTA 6

As reported by IGN, GTA 6′s vehicle systems reveal just how far Rockstar is taking this idea. According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, GTA 6 will feature different layers of vehicle security, with some cars protected by modern electronic systems that require specialized equipment to bypass. The WAINK scanner can identify a vehicle’s security system and value, while tools such as a digital key cloning device will allow Jason and Lucia to access certain higher-end cars. Some of these tools will also be locked behind progression, giving the company another way to make vehicle theft evolve alongside GTA 6‘s story.

GTA 6 also gives players more to worry about after successfully getting behind the wheel. Some stolen vehicles can have trackers installed, with more advanced systems potentially alerting law enforcement if the car is driven below a certain speed. GTA 6 makes the escape itself part of the theft, while stolen cars can eventually be taken to fences and sold for money. Players can also find out how much it costs to officially register a stolen vehicle as their own, and both Jason and Lucia can own multiple personal vehicles as long as they have enough money and garage space.

These systems could also give GTA 6‘s missions more flexibility than previous games, as stealing a vehicle becomes more than pressing a button, and each theft comes with certain requirements. GTA 6 could take the same philosophy into larger store robberies, too. A small store might have relatively basic security that can be overcome with little preparation, while a bank or heavily guarded facility could require specialized equipment to reach the most valuable loot. Having the right tools could therefore determine not just whether a robbery succeeds, but what players are actually able to steal.

GTA 6′s vehicles ultimately look like another example of Rockstar trying to make familiar Grand Theft Auto mechanics feel more dynamic. Stealing a car will still be one of the first things players can do in GTA 6, but choosing a target, figuring out its security, dealing with trackers, escaping the police, and eventually turning the vehicle into a source of profit all give the process considerably more depth. With Leonida’s narrower streets and denser traffic also making driving more demanding, even a basic car theft could create situations that feel much less predictable than simply pressing a button and driving away.
