GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games has detailed how several side activities will work, not least of which are fishing and hunting. It’s clear that several of GTA 6‘s side activities expand on the “life sim” aspect of GTA: San Andreas, and it’s no different this time around.
It seems that the floodgates have opened, ever so slightly, since GTA 6‘s Extended Look on Netflix. Now that official gameplay is out there, it seems there may be a consistent flow of news for the next few weeks, if not directly into launch.
GTA 6: How Fishing and Hunting Works
Speaking with YouTuber TGG, Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson discussed several of GTA 6’s side activities, including fishing that is said to be as detailed as Red Dead Redemption 2‘s. One major difference, however, is that players will have to release every fish they catch, with Nelson adding that the ability to keep fish “didn’t fit this game” as it did in RDR2. It means GTA 6 could offer a surprisingly deep fishing activity without turning it into another inventory or money-making system.
Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.
Hunting is also taking a different approach. According to the newly shared details, players will be able to hunt animals and use what they get from the activity to make money. Hunting will also be introduced through a new GTA 6 character who already knows Jason, thus ensuring it does not feel like a completely disconnected minigame. More details about exactly how hunting works have not been revealed, but the money-making element could give players another reason to explore the wilderness. Perhaps it’ll be one of the best ways to make money in GTA 6, so fans should expect extensive hunting guides post-launch.
These activities are just part of what appears to be a much broader focus on making GTA 6‘s Vice City react to what Jason and Lucia actually do. The game is reportedly tracking several physical and lifestyle factors, meaning the protagonists won’t simply have static attributes throughout the entire adventure.
- GTA 6 protagonists Jason and Lucia can gain weight from eating too much and lose muscle if they stop maintaining it.
- Sleep quality is tracked and can affect how quickly certain attributes regenerate, while going without sleep for too long can lead to slower regeneration and visible bags under the characters’ eyes.
- Gyms also require a membership at the front desk, and both protagonists can work out together, with the inactive character exercising alongside the one being controlled. Nelson reportedly described this as an “emergent date.”
- Coffee and energy drinks can temporarily increase stamina during workouts, while weightlifting uses L2 and R2 to control individual repetitions.
- Swimming will also reportedly change the stamina system, replacing the normal stamina bar with a lung-capacity meter.
These details suggest Rockstar is going well beyond simply filling GTA 6 with activities for players to complete. Fishing, hunting, exercise, food and sleep all appear to be tied into different character systems, potentially giving players more reasons to engage with the world even when they’re not following the main story. With fishing and hunting now offering a better idea of what to expect, GTA 6‘s side activities could end up being some of its most detailed features.
