The latest news on the online multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto 6 may have some fans feeling deflated, to say the least. Grand Theft Auto 6 is enjoying an unprecedented level of hype, and is set to be one of the biggest game launches of all time, if not the biggest. And a big reason why so many people are excited for GTA 6 is because of the high bar set by Rockstar’s previous games. Rockstar consistently delivers high-quality, landmark releases, and all it accomplished with GTA 5 has created extremely high expectations for GTA 6.
While GTA 5 had an incredible single-player experience that still holds up to this day, the game has enjoyed remarkable longevity because of its online multiplayer component. The GTA 5 online multiplayer mode eventually grew into its own thing, with GTA Online enjoying regular content updates that have kept fans engaged for well over a decade. With the runaway success of GTA Online, many assumed that Rockstar would have GTA 6‘s online mode ready to go at or near launch, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Latest Statement on GTA 6 Online Multiplayer Mode
Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t said much about what to expect from the Grand Theft Auto 6 online mode, but the latest statement is that the game is “a single-player title” and there will be continued support for the existing GTA Online after GTA 6 releases. The scope of the support for the existing GTA Online remains to be seen, but the wording does suggest that it will continue to receive new content, even in a post-GTA 6 world. The desire to keep labeling GTA 6 as a “single-player title” is also telling, as it suggests fans shouldn’t expect to see an online version of the game within its launch window.
With Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar added online after launch. Fans had to wait a couple of weeks before playing GTA 5‘s online mode, while the wait was a little longer with RDR2. Those hoping for a similar wait between the launch of GTA 6 and its online mode are likely out of luck. While there’s always the possibility Rockstar will release the online mode sooner than expected, the most likely scenario is that GTA 6‘s online mode won’t come until 2027 at the earliest.
That being said, nothing official has even been released about the GTA 6 online mode. Leaks have suggested that it will feature extensive user-generated content options and may be a platform in and of itself, ala Fortnite or Roblox, but that has yet to be confirmed. At the very least, fans should be able to expect an experience comparable to the current GTA Online, but with the graphical quality of GTA 6 and set in the new game’s giant open world.
Even though GTA 6 is launching without an online multiplayer mode, it should still be a massive success at launch on November 19. What’s been shown of the GTA 6 single-player gameplay so far has looked impressive, and fans will find out if it lives up to the hype within the next couple of months.
