Rockstar Games has revealed how much bigger Grand Theft Auto 6 is compared to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, and the answer is a lot. The natural question for any gamer when discussing open-world games is how big the world is and how it compares to other massive games, but the best answer always depends. Sometimes a more expansive open-world is fitting, but there’s definitely merit to smaller worlds with more handcrafted content.
Rockstar’s open-world games have always been held to a high standard, though, so bigger is definitely better here. For added context, the map of Grand Theft Auto 5 is roughly 31 square miles, while the map of Red Dead Redemption 2 is roughly 29 square miles. These numbers do not count water and outer edges, and so there is definitely some “interpretation” involved in determining GTA 6‘s map size (and it also depends on what parts exactly are being compared).
GTA 6 Map Size is Huge
All that said, according to YouTuber TCG, who was able to visit Rockstar Games and see GTA 6 before the Netflix Extended Look debut, Rockstar told him that it was:
- Twice the overall size of GTA 5‘s map
- Three times the overall size of RDR2’s map
- Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos
- Vice City and its Surrounding Areas is ELEVEN times the size of Los Santos and its Surrounding Areas
Vice City is obviously a more dominant region of the GTA 6 map than Los Santos was, as there were a lot of country areas outside Los Santos, but map comparison would suggest GTA 6 is somewhere between 62 and 87 square miles. Even then, it’s also possible that the Rockstar developers were not speaking literally and more by their gut, and so it’s possible that it’s slightly smaller or bigger. Given that Vice City is the main attraction, but certainly not the only area involved, it’ll be interesting to see how big the map ends up being. It’ll be even more interesting to see players perform challenges from one side of the map to the other, as oftentimes happens with big game worlds.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has not yet been released, but Netflix finally put it out into the world. It seems to be living up to expectations. From little features to big, from the characterizations of Jason & Lucia to gameplay, everything Rockstar showed—fans are eating it up. It’s uncertain what’s next on the road to release, but it seems safe to say many fans are eagerly awaiting GTA 6‘s November 19 release date now.
Either way, it won’t be long now until players are cruising through Vice City, managing GTA 6 protagonists Jason and Lucia’s relationship, and getting into all kinds of trouble with the law. The days are counting down.
