GTA 6’s Story Mission Approach Exposes One Open-World Game Habit That Needs to Die

Although it is true that open-world games are supposed to make players want to wander off the main path, sometimes being a little too curious may come with an unexpected downside. Imagine spending an hour exploring a new area, only for the main story to bring you there again a few days later, making you go through the whole thing all over again. Without a doubt, this is often the fastest way to ruin the excitement of discovery and make players feel like they made a mistake by visiting a location early. It seems like GTA 6 is set to avoid this approach.

According to Rockstar Games in an interview with Game Informer (via Tribune), the story will take Jason and Lucia across Leonida and introduce players to a lot of exciting locations, but that certainly won’t include the entire map. Ever since GTA 6‘s world was compared to GTA 5‘s map, fans have known to expect a massive world, and leaving some of it entirely up to the player could be exactly the right plan. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of venturing somewhere on your own only to find out that if you hadn’t done it, the story would never have brought you there; after all, having your curiosity rewarded instead of punished is one of the biggest reasons open-world games are so appealing in the first place.

10 Details You Probably Missed in the GTA 6 Extended Look

GTA 6’s Extended Look was packed with small details, hidden mechanics, and easy-to-miss moments that reveal even more about Leonida.

One of the biggest perks of playing open-world games is having the opportunity to wander off somewhere just because it looks interesting. However, having to go through the same area twice is not only annoying because you are repeating the same experience, it is also frustrating because there is often no way to skip it. Those who have played Enderal: Forgotten Stories know exactly what it feels like. This can make any quest feel like a punishment. Moreover, the idea that the story has to walk players through every corner of the map generally defeats the entire purpose of having an open-world game—nobody even wants to walk off the main path in the first place if the game insists on holding their hand the entire time.

Killing player curiosity is also the fastest route to make a game’s world feel smaller than it actually is, no matter the size. That way, it will always seem like once the main story is over, the game is done too. Thankfully, this is not mandatory to happen. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has already confirmed in an interview with IGN that there will be plenty of things players can discover without being directed there through objectives, blips, or map icons. In fact, he specifically said that exploring will reward players “a lot.” Instead of treating every interesting location as something the campaign eventually needs to reveal, GTA 6 seems willing to trust players to find some of them themselves.

GTA 6 Has Even More Reasons to Leave Parts of Leonida Alone

With a world as massive as Leonida, it’s hard to imagine coming up with a story that will not only cover every area but will also stay meaningful enough to satisfy players. As reported by GTA Intel, Rupert Humphries confirmed that although the campaign will introduce players to most of Leonida’s different locations, it simply cannot take them everywhere. And this may be one of the most mature ways of looking at the situation; it’s no doubt better to have a shorter and beautiful story instead of a watered-down campaign aimed at covering all the areas without really contributing to the experience.

Moreover, this approach will probably give most individual locations a clearer purpose in the narrative. When Jason and Lucia end up in a new place, players will have a reason to pay attention to what brought them there. This way, certain areas could become closely associated with specific events or stages in the journey, making them memorable. This is especially valuable in a world of this size, where different environments can easily blend together, turning every experience into a blur.

Sometimes Less Really Is More

Open-world games don’t necessarily need to make every location part of the main story, and this act of disconnection from the protagonists can often be beneficial, also in terms of making the entire setting more convincing. For example, everyone is the main character of their own life, but not having visited every location on Earth is hardly enough to make the rest of the world feel less real. If anything, it’s exactly the opposite. The fact that there are places that exist completely outside of our own stories makes the world feel so much bigger and better.

Last, but not least, leaving entire locations outside of the campaign often gives players a reason to keep coming back to the game after they’ve finished the main story. In a game like GTA 6, reaching the credits and still having no idea what other parts of the world have to offer is just as exciting as getting to see Jason and Lucia’s journey unfold. As it may turn out, the places that remain out of the story might be just as important as the ones in it.
