GTA Online Confirms Major Summer Update, And It Could Be Its Last

Grand Theft Auto Online developer Rockstar Games has confirmed that the popular live-service title will receive an “exciting” new content update this Summer. While the team is hard at work on the next mainline entry in the series, it hasn’t forgotten about Grand Theft Auto Online, the powerhouse multiplayer element released shortly after Grand Theft Auto 5 back in 2013. The title continues to be as popular as ever, but with Grand Theft Auto 6 on the horizon, this could be GTA Online‘s final update.

The last major update for Grand Theft Auto Online was released for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in December 2025. After years of requests, ‘A Safehouse in the Hills’ finally gave fans what they had been begging for: purchasable mansions in Los Santos. The update also added new missions to the game, new vehicles, and the return of Michael De Santa, one of Grand Theft Auto 5‘s three main protagonists. Prior to Grand Theft Auto 6‘s most recent delay, many had anticipated A Safehouse in the Hills to be the final update for Grand Theft Auto Online. That, clearly, wasn’t the case. But with a new update now confirmed for Summer 2026, and GTA 6 launching shortly after, there’s a good chance fans may finally be about to say goodbye to one of the most popular live-service titles around.

It’s a good thing Grand Theft Auto 6 didn’t release in May

With May now in full swing, it has become abundantly clear that Rockstar Games was right to move Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date to November.

GTA Online Summer 2026 Update Confirmed

In a new blog post released today, May 7, Rockstar quietly confirmed that a new update for Grand Theft Auto Online will be released in the Summer. As part of the ‘Upcoming Improvements and Adjustments’ section of the past, Rockstar said it is constantly working to make GTA Online a better experience for all players, including rebalancing, targeting cheaters, and more. The team goes on to state that it will be adjusting vehicle prices so that certain vehicles are more accessible and have prices that better reflect their value. Finally, Rockstar said there is plenty more to look forward to in Grand Theft Auto Online, including a variety of special events and celebrations, and an “exciting” new update this Summer.

The contents of the update are unconfirmed, and there have yet to be any leaks surrounding the DLC (unlike December 2025’s update). However, the future of Grand Theft Auto Online post-GTA 6 is unclear, and there’s speculation that this update could be the game’s big goodbye. With Michael’s triumphant return and a huge new feature included in A Safehouse in the Hills, it looked like Rockstar was gearing up for December’s update to be the game’s last, prior to Grand Theft Auto 6 once again being delayed. The title will now launch on November 19, 2026, which means the upcoming Summer update should arrive just a few months beforehand.

There has been no word from Rockstar as to whether or not support for Grand Theft Auto Online will continue after GTA 6 release, and, if it does, what that support may look like. Given that it has become one of the most popular live-service titles around, it’s unlikely that Rockstar will completely shut down the game’s servers, meaning support may continue. However, what seems less likely is new content updates, as Rockstar will be pumping all of its resources into the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto Online.

Although Rockstar hasn’t commented on the future of Grand Theft Auto Online, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has. Earlier this year, the studio head said he has “every reason to believe” that support for GTA Online will continue after GTA 6 is released. “There’s a great community that loves it, that stays engaged. And again in this quarter, Rockstar has shown that when you deliver great additional content, despite how long [GTA Online] has been at market, people show up,” the CEO said.
