Arkansas Republicans are currently pushing new “welfare-to-work” requirements that make it harder to get government assistance for things like food and healthcare. To get the message across to voters ahead of the state’s 2026 election, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders wants you to imagine a lazy gamer named Brad who just eats cheese puffs all day, paid for by your taxes.
“You pay taxes to cover welfare for people who just choose not to work,” the former White House press secretary posted on September 28. “That’s why I launched a welfare-to-work requirement. If you’re young, healthy, and get government assistance, you should work, go to school, or volunteer.”

Work requirements always sound good in principle—the state should help people in need but also require them to contribute back to society in some way—but the requirements themselves usually only have the effect of making it harder for qualified individuals to access government benefits. Republicans like this because it makes it easier to cut social welfare without sounding like they’re cutting programs people otherwise support like Medicaid and SNAP. Most of these benefits have already been cut within an inch of their lives and made incredibly hard to qualify for.
But the irony this time around is that a certain kind of very online gamer is also one of the demographics that the GOP has tried to openly court during the Trump years. Young white men disillusioned with an economy in which wages are stagnating have tended to be a dependable Republican voting bloc in recent years. The slice of that group that games a lot, or spends a lot of its time online in gaming-adjacent spaces, has become a particularly loud purveyor of certain right-wing talking points, especially in the culture war arena.
That hasn’t stopped Republicans in Congress from trying to turn the image of a 29-year-old gamer into a welfare state boogie man. The response among some of the party’s fringe has been to argue that Republicans aren’t being racist enough.
