A dedicated Hogwarts Legacy player has found a hidden Easter egg involving the Chamber of Secrets after putting 160 hours into the game. Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG from 2023, set in the expansive fantasy world of the Harry Potter series. The game debuted to a majority of strong reviews, praising the expansive and immersive nature of the open world, along with the variety of references to the source material. Harry Potter fans found their lifelong dreams fulfilled as they took the mantle of a Hogwarts student, able to attend all kinds of magical classes and battle memorable foes. One aspect of Hogwarts Legacy that stood out more than any other was the game’s dedication to the series’ lore, feeling like a love letter to the Wizarding World.
This lore was readily available in several forms, ranging from quests that the player could embark on to listening to dialogue NPCs would say to one another, with Hogwarts Legacy fans even encountering an escaped Azkaban prisoner. Another form it took, the favorite of many fans, was Easter eggs hidden through the readable notes found around Hogwarts Legacy. These handwritten pages often contained surface-level world-building that would create little nods to the Harry Potter franchise when paired with players’ knowledge of the series. Two years after the game was initially released, it seems players are still uncovering many of these hidden Easter eggs.

Hogwarts Legacy Fan Finds Easter Egg Referencing the Basilisk
Much like the Hogwarts Legacy player who discovered a Hogsmeade secret after two years, a different fan has just uncovered a hidden Easter egg involving the Chamber of Secrets. The Easter egg revolves around a note left by Salazar Slytherin (one of Hogwarts four founders), and tells of his frustrations with the school. The part of the note that gripped so many fans, and something fans of the Harry Potter series will immediately understand, is the mention of a certain creature being put into a deep sleep. This creature is none other than the basilisk, the main evil creature responsible for all the attacks in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Among the many Hogwarts Legacy references to the Chamber of Secrets, this one certainly stands out due to it being directly written by Salazar Slytherin himself. During Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (spoiler incoming for the story), it is revealed that Salazar Slytherin made the Chamber of Secrets to hide his basilisk, a creature powerful enough to kill with just its gaze. His intentions were never completely explained, but the main premise was that Slytherin hated any wizards and witches who weren’t purebloods (full magical heritage), and wanted to rid Hogwarts of them with this creature. Ultimately, the basilisk was laid into a deep sleep, with Slytherin hoping a descendant could come awaken it to cleanse Hogwarts of its “unworthy” students. Thanks to this note found in Hogwarts Legacy, Salazar Slytherin’s motives are clearer, with the situation regarding the other Hogwarts founders leading to the Chamber of Secrets and the basilisk’s creation.
If nothing else, Hogwarts Legacy is certainly a love letter to fans of the Harry Potter series. Every nook and cranny seems to hold some reference or Easter egg, letting the eagle-eyed fans enjoy great gameplay and strong storytelling. It’s very likely the dedicated fans who work so hard to uncover secrets in these games will soon find yet another, thanks to the immersive world Hogwarts Legacy contains. With the possibility of Hogwarts Legacy 2 featuring characters from the Harry Potter books and movies, it seems almost certain that a sequel would maintain the lore-based elements. Hopefully, a sequel can expand on everything great about Hogwarts Legacy, including hiding many Easter eggs for players to find years after its release.
