Spoilers ahead for Honkai: Star Rail’s story.
Honkai: Star Rail is a game that regularly showcases the moral dilemmas of its characters. Although there’s a clear line about whom the good guys and bad guys are, sometimes it’s not always black and white. Such is the case with Honkai: Star Rail character Aventurine.
Aventurine was first introduced as an NPC representing the Interastral Peace Corporation (IPC) in Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.0, which was the beginning of the Penacony arc. In Version 2.1, he was launched as a 5-star Imaginary-type banner character. Aventurine is also a well-known gambler, whose mysterious charm causes people to distrust him. But as the story of Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.1 revealed, Aventurine has lived a difficult life, and his neck tattoo is proof of this.

Honkai: Star Rail’s Tides of War event continues the game’s streak of interesting limited-time events with exciting mechanics.
The Truth Behind Aventurine’s Neck Tattoo
Apart from his flashy ensemble, people recognize Aventurine by his piercing purple eyes, which are unique to Avgins from Sigonia, and the visible tattoo on his neck. The latter is not for aesthetics, but rather a “commodity code” that was tattooed on his neck when he was purchased to become a slave before joining the IPC. Some Honkai: Star Rail fans also deciphered the tattoo’s text, and it allegedly translates to “slave.”
Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.1 is heavy with backstories, especially for Aventurine. Born on the desert planet of Sigonia-IV, Aventurine is an orphan believed to be the sole survivor of the Katica-Avgin Extinction Event, which took the lives of 6,728 Avgins and over 3,000 missing. As he got older, he had to fend for himself while depending on his unbelievable luck, especially after he was purchased and imprisoned by the “Indifferent Male” who branded him.

Aventurine was freed from slavery when the IPC apprehended him for killing his master. To avoid a trial and further imprisonment, Aventurine makes a bet with Jade, promising that he will bring wealth and success to the IPC if the organization takes him in — and the rest is history. Just like how he survived the Extinction Event, he believes that he got the IPC position because of fate and luck. But despite becoming a respectable IPC worker, some are still wary around Aventurine because of his Sigonian features and the tattoo on his neck.
Aventurine’s tattoo has inspired a number of Honkai: Star Rail fans to get it inked on their necks. While it does look cool at first, this also shows why it’s important to go through Honkai: Star Rail‘s story, or at the very least Aventurine’s lore, to know what this text meant.
Aventurine’s Story is a Good Sign for Honkai: Star Rail’s Future Plot Points
It’s no secret that Honkai: Star Rail‘s Penacony arc is probably one of the darkest premises in the game so far, from Aventurine’s slavery to solving a murder in the Dreamscape. This could be a good thing for Honkai: Star Rail‘s future plot points, as in-depth backstories that show characters’ struggles and motivations could give them more dimension. Aventurine is a great example of this, as many Honkai: Star Rail players went from being suspicious of him to empathizing with him after playing through his story in Version 2.1.
While the goal isn’t to show the “good side” of Honkai: Star Rail‘s villains, or those perceived as villains, such stories can provide insight into characters’ intentions if they’re done right. The game still has a lot of playable characters to introduce in future updates, which gives it more room to cook up interesting stories for them. Plus, Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.2 is just around the corner, so fans can expect more storytelling like this as the Penacony arc slowly comes to a close.
