Windrose is a new pirate survival game that allows you to tackle the pirate world as a lone captain or with a crew of your friends in online co-op. Multiplayer is fully supported, but there are some rules and restrictions that you’ll want to know about before you attempt to play with your friends.
Below, we’ll go into everything you need to know about co-op multiplayer in Windrose.
Co-op multiplayer explained in Windrose
For starters, Windrose only supports online co-op, meaning that there is no option for local split-screen co-op. You can only invite players to a world if they join on a different PC and they’re connected to the internet.
When you start up Windrose and choose the “Play” button, you’re met with a few different options. The first option is “Solo/Offline,” which creates a world that is just for you and can be played in an offline environment.
Fortunately, you can make a solo world into a multiplayer world at any time, so if your friends want to join you on your adventures, you don’t have to create an entirely new playthrough. To do that, all you have to do is select “Host a game” instead of “Solo/Offline.” Then, select your solo world, and it will give you an invite code that you can use to invite your friends.
The invite code can be submitted using the “Connect to server” option in the “Play” menu of Windrose. Once you initially join a server, it will be saved so you can easily join it again in the future without having to re-enter the code.
How to host a world in Windrose

This brings us to hosting a multiplayer world in the first place. You can follow those same steps to host your own world, but instead of selecting an existing world, choose “Create new.” From here, you can edit your “World Properties,” which allows you to select the difficulty of the world and customize multiplayer settings. After you’re done with that, you can send out the invite code for that world to your friends.
You’re able to have a maximum of eight players on a world, so that’s you and up to seven other friends. However, the game highly recommends a max of four players, as adding more can tremendously affect the performance of the world. It’s likely you’ll see a significant dip in FPS as well as some textures not loading in, stuttering, etc.
You can also set a server name and use a password to ensure no random player can join your world. Of course, everyone who wants to join the world will need to know those details to be able to play on it.
When you actually get into the world and start playing, progress between all of the players in the world is shared in some ways, but not others. In the “World Properties” menu, you can toggle a multiplayer setting called “Shared Quest Progress.” When this is enabled, all quests marked “co-op quests” are completed for players in the world who have the quest active when a single player finishes it. For example, if one player completes the tutorial quest, then it auto-completes for everyone else because all players have it active in their journal when first starting Windrose.

You can toggle this setting off if you want all players to complete quests at their own pace. You can also customize the scaling of enemies in co-op, meaning enemies are scaled depending on how many players are active on the server.
Finally, Windrose also offers dedicated servers through Nitrado. You can select the “Create dedicated server” button in the “Play” menu to learn more about hosting your own server, which takes you to Nitrado’s website.
Now that you know more about how co-op works in Windrose, make sure you can stay alive long enough to enjoy the game by finding out all of the ways to heal yourself.
