How Final Fantasy 14’s Fourth Reflection Differs From Others

Spoilers for Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 and speculation for Evercold follow.

During the first Fan Festival of 2026, Final Fantasy 14 revealed Evercold, a new expansion expected to arrive in January 2027. The first part of the Godless Realms Saga, Evercold takes fans to the never-before-seen Fourth Reflection. Featuring floating islands and crystalline constructs, the Warrior of Light must travel to the Fourth to stop the Winterers from enacting an artificial Rejoining, all while finding a way to protect it from the inevitable Solstice. Needless to say, the premise for this Final Fantasy 14 expansion is promising.

The world of Etheirys in Final Fantasy 14 was fractured into 14 shards by Hydaelyn in her war against the dark god, Zodiark. Most of the game’s story takes place on the Source, the “core” of Etheirys, but as of Dawntrail, players have visited many of the 13 reflections. Though the Fourth has never been spoken of until now, it has many traits that make it unique and important from what has been shown,.

Final Fantasy 14 7.5 Patch Addresses Recent G’raha Tia Controversy

The new Final Fantasy 14 7.5 patch addresses an issue with popular NPC G’raha Tia after fans noticed something unusual in the game.

Reflections, Calamities, and Rejoinings in Final Fantasy 14

The History and Fate of the 14 Shards of Etheirys

The goal of the Ascians in Final Fantasy 14 was to piece together the fragments of Zodiark by Rejoining reflections with the Source. Successfully doing so required them to create matching Calamities on both the Source and another shard, destroying the reflection in the process. As of A Realm Reborn, seven shards had been Rejoined, each marked by one of the Umbral Calamities that ravaged the Source in FF14:

Umbral Calamity

Had one more Rejoining occurred before the defeat of the Ascians in FF14, it was implied that Zodiark would have been able to overpower Hydaelyn and escape, as he would have recovered over half of his missing pieces.

Of the 14 worlds, only the Source and six reflections still exist in some capacity, many of which have already appeared in the critically acclaimed MMORPG:

  • The First

    • Nearly succumbed to the Flood of Light
    • Setting of Shadowbringers
  • The Thirteenth

    • Unsuccessfully Rejoined in a Flood of Darkness and became the Void
    • Origin of all Voidsent in FF14, prominent in the post-Endwalker patch story
  • The Ninth

    • Nearly destroyed by the Storm Surge
    • Home of Alexandria, Treno, and Living Memory from Dawntrail
  • The Fourth

  • The Eighth and the Eleventh

    • Mysterious shards with no information available about them

The Fourth Reflection Faces a New Type of Calamity

While half of the shards of Etheirys were completely destroyed by the Ascians, and others were despoiled by attempted Rejoinings, the Fourth is unique in that it has seemingly had little direct influence from the Ascians. While Halmarut revealed she and her Winterers currently have designs on it in FF14 Patch 7.5, it is unclear how much her colleagues had tampered with it before recent events. Players will have to keep an eye out for the hallmarks of Ascian influence as they explore this mysterious world.

From what is known, the Fourth shares some things in common with the First. Also known as Norvrandt, the First was nearly destroyed by the Flood of Light in an unsuccessful Rejoining by the Ascians. The attempt failed, but nearly wiped out all life on Norvrandt in the process. The people of the First survived in settlements like the Crystarium, similarly to how the denizens of the Fourth escaped the creeping frost by building kingdoms in the sky.

On the other hand, the Ninth Reflection in Final Fantasy 14 was beset by a cataclysmic event called the Storm Surge. This lightning-aspected catastrophe wiped out much of the shard, though pockets of civilization, like Alexandria and Treno, survived. It is unclear if the insidious winter plaguing the Fourth is the result of the Winterer’s schemes or the Solstice—the natural Rejoining of the shards occurring in the absence of Hydaelyn. Either way, the Fourth is contending with a similar elemental catastrophe.

It is possible the Storm Surge on the Ninth could be connected to the Solstice as well. The timeline does not match up, considering the FF14 goddess Hydaelyn only recently fell, but the time dilation between shards makes it plausible.

By Endwalker, nothing was known about the Fourth, Eighth, Ninth, and Eleventh shards. With the exploration of the Ninth in Dawntrail, and the Fourth coming in FF14: Evercold, fans shouldn’t be surprised if the Eighth and Eleventh show up in the future, perhaps with fire, water, earth, or wind-aspected cataclysms of their own.

References to Norse Mythology on the Fourth in FF14: Evercold

And How They Might Tie Into the Godless Realms Saga

The FF14: Evercold teaser trailer, screenshots, and concept show a number of references to Norse mythology, which could hint at the plot of Evercold. Here are some of the biggest Norse mythological references shown so far:

  • The great tree seen in the mural, and later frozen before the praying Auri girl, could be an homage to Yggdrasil, the sacred tree that connects the realms of Norse myth.
  • The creeping frost that threatens the Fourth is reminiscent of Fimbulvetr, the awful winter precursor to Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse.
  • The elderly, one-eyed male Au Ra could be a reference to Odin, the leader of the Norse pantheon.
  • The bridge and portal conjured by Ethos and Azem’s crystal to traverse worlds are similar to Bifrost, the rainbow bridge of Asgard in Norse myth.
  • Calyx, the Winterer from the Ninth, takes the form of a squirrel plush, which might be a reference to Ratatoskr, a messenger who travels across Yggdrasil.
  • Some of the architecture seen in Evercold’s concept art bears Norse inspiration, including the ships and serpentine structures evocative of Jormungandr, the World Serpent.

In Evercold, the oncoming ice age seems to be a herald of the Solstice: Ragnarok in its own right. The Odin-like Au Ra likely seeks to oppose this destruction, and may even be the Winterer on the Fourth. Meanwhile, the great tree from the trailer could be the answer to fixing it all. After all, Yggdrasil connects the various realms of Norse mythology; if the tree from the Fourth could do the same, perhaps the impending Solstice could be forestalled.

Sephirot was a primal summoned by a race of plant-like beings who worshiped a divine tree in Meracydia on the Source. Players have long anticipated a visit to this mysterious continent, so if the Sephirot tree has a connection to the Fourth’s, Meracydia could finally show up in the Godless Realms Saga.

Final Fantasy 7 has a lot of Norse references as well, most notably the city of Midgar, named after the Norse word for the realm of earth. Given the FF7 references seen in Final Fantasy 14’s Fan Fest cash shop items, and the Cetra-esque architecture from concept art, Evercold could possibly see a Midgar of its own.

Of course, all of this could be completely circumstantial. There are several existing Norse references in Final Fantasy 14 already, including Midgardsormr, Nidhogg, and the primal Odin, all unconnected with this theory. Even so, Evercold is clearly building up to some huge twists, and the nature of the Fourth itself may be key to Final Fantasy 14‘s Godless Realms Saga.
