How to Get Psychic Grapple in Metroid Prime 4

How to Get Psychic Grapple in Metroid Prime 4

The Psychic Grapple is an ability in Metroid Prime 4 that allows Samus to attach to Grapple Nodes and Points. This makes it possible to reach high places and cross chasms, and players will need to unlock the Grapple Beam if they hope to reach the end of the game. This guide details exactly how that is done, and players that have questions about Metroid Prime 4‘s Psychic Grapple can find answers here.

The Psychic Grapple is distinct from the Psychic Lasso, which is unlocked much earlier in the game. Indeed, the Lasso allows Samus to pull certain objects, while the Grapple allows her to swing from others.

Pre-Requisites

Players can pursue the Psychic Grapple after unlocking Vi-O-La IC Mode, which makes it possible to cross lava pools while riding Vi-O-La. While players will be brought to that ability while working through the game, here are the steps that lead up to its acquisition:

  1. Unlock Fire Shot, and use it to enter Ice Belt.
  2. Beat Keratos at the end of Ice Belt to unlock Psychic Boost Ball.
  3. Return to Volt Forge, and navigate to Tower 3.
  4. Use Psychic Boost Ball inside the Spinner in Tower 3’s first room.

Flare Pool

After unlocking the Vi-O-La IC Suit, players should make their way back to Flare Pool. It is now possible to cross the large pool of lava where the bridge was activated previously, and players should enter the facility on the far side. Players must now work through this facility, rescuing a couple of members of the Galactic Federation along the way, to reach a battle with Phenoros, and the Psychic Grapple is awarded at the end of that fight.

The fight with Phenoros has two phases. In the first phase, simply ride next to the boss, lock onto the orbs on its underside, and fire at them. In the second phase, destroy the orbs on Phenoros’s head, and damage the boss by firing at its tongue. When Phenoros collapses, activate the Psychic Visor, charge a Psychic Beam, and guide it down the boss’s throat to hit an orb inside.

After unlocking Psychic Grapple, be on the lookout for Grapple Nodes and Points, objects that are marked with a grapple icon. When such an object is found, press and hold ZL to attach to it, and release that button to detach. Additionally, players can use the left joystick to swing from some of these objects, and they will need to do exactly that to reach the next elemental shot in Metroid Prime 4.
