Are you hoping to unlock Metal Farms in Subnautica 2? Let’s face it: Most survival games will have you put in quite a bit of effort just to gather materials. However, with this particular contraption, you can sit back, relax, and come back later when you need to collect resources.
Subnautica 2 base guide – The Metal Farm
Those who are playing on Creative Mode have almost nothing to worry about. That’s because that mode grants unlimited resources, which means you can build whatever you want without bothering to farm materials. On the other side of the coin, there’s Survival Mode, where farming isn’t just expected… it’s mandatory.
Metal Farms location
The Subnautica 2 Metal Farms sub-zone is a long distance away from the Lifepod. It’s approximately 2,100 meters east of the Lifepod, or 850 meters from the Alien Ruins marker (assuming you’ve progressed a bit further into the sandbox campaign). Before you head over there, though, make sure you’ve already built a Tadpole vehicle. Not only does it speed up underwater traversal, it also protects you from hostile creatures–i.e. If you’re inside a vehicle, it will take damage instead of your character.
In any case, once you arrive at the Metal Farms area, you’ll notice a large glowing pool. Surrounding it are several curious-looking structures. Just scan these to unlock the Metal Farms blueprint. Oh, and watch out for the deadly Epicurean fish and the Leviathan that’s lurking nearby.
Metal Farm crafting materials
The Metal Farm in Subnautica 2 can be crafted via the Habitat builder. The blueprint appears in the Cultivation tab, and each one costs 1x Mangalloy Alloy and 1x Axum Bacterial Culture:
- Axum Bacterial Culture comes from round, organic growths in the aforementioned glowing pool.
- Mangalloy Alloy, meanwhile, is manufactured via the Processor. Each one requires 1x Titanium Ingot, 1x Atacamite, and 1x Troilite:
- Each Titanium Alloy requires 3x Titanium.
- Atacamite can be acquired from obsidian black deposits near the Alien Base–i.e. in the area with the Angel Bloom Adaptation and giant turbine.
- Troilite can be found around the glowing pool as well. This comes from ore nodes with a deep green hue.

How to make use of the Metal Farm
Upon obtaining the required materials, go ahead and construct a Metal Farm on a solid surface using your Habitat Builder. Just remember the following caveats:
- Each Metal Farm consumes 20 energy. That means you should build several Hydroelectric Turbines and other power generating machines.
- Click on the Metal Farm and place a valid type of ore–i.e. Titanium, Quartz, Lithium, Silver, Atacamite, Celestine, and others.
- You’ll then see a timer that counts down. Once enough time has elapsed, shoot the protruding node with your Sonic Resonator/Feedback Resonator to receive the minerals.
That does it for our guide on how to unlock the Metal Farm in Subnautica 2. While you’re checking out this particular area, you might want to complete the objectives related to the Alien Observatory Door and Alien Turbine.
Subnautica 2 is currently in early access, which means new biomes, systems, and story beats are expected to be added as part of updates. For everything you need to know about the game, you can visit our Subnautica 2 guides hub.
