Are you searching for the Thermal Plant in Subnautica 2? This is a viable source of power for your base, but you need to head to a more hazardous area just to obtain it. Our guide has all the details that you need.
Subnautica 2 base guide – The Thermal Plant
The Subnautica 2 Thermal Plant is unlocked once you’re able to scan two of its fragments. The good news is that a couple of fragments are right next to each other. The bad news is that they’re located in a location that’s not for the faint of heart.
Thermal Plant fragments location
The Thermal Plant fragments are at the border of the Shallows and Zezuran Desert. You can reach this area if you head east-southeast from the Lifepod. If you’re following our mini-walkthrough, then this spot is fairly close to the Tadpole Pens, too.
However, take note that the Zezuran Desert has extremely high temperatures–hotter than the Philippines during the summer season. Your character’s health will slowly get depleted unless you obtain the Heat Tolerance Adaptation.
In any case, once you arrive at the aforementioned area, you should see the two fragments at the edge of a cliff. Scan both of them and watch out for the Marrowheads swimming nearby.
Thermal Plant crafting materials and usage
Each Thermal Plant in Subnautica 2 requires 3x Titanium, 3x Copper, and 3x Gold. Given the materials that you need, you might want to maximize each structure’s efficiency. Here’s how:
- Thermal Plants generate +1 to 16 energy per second. The amount they generate is based on the temperature of the surface where you place them.
- The Zezuran Desert happens to be filled with numerous thermal vents that produce high heat. These vents tend to protrude from sinewy branches and outcroppings. Thermal Plants that are placed next to these automatically generate the maximum amount of +16 energy per second.
- Ideally, you should place five or more Thermal Plants that are close enough to a single vent (assuming there’s enough space).
- From there, just build a single Power Transmitter to connect all of them. Construct additional transmitters so that the last node is attached to your base’s exterior.

That does it for our guide on how to unlock the Thermal Plant in Subnautica 2. Since we’re already on the subject of powering up your base’s facilities, you might be interested in learning about the Hydroelectric Turbine and the Bioreactor.
Subnautica 2 is currently in early access, which means new biomes, systems, and story beats are expected to be added as part of updates. For everything you need to know about the game, you can visit our Subnautica 2 guides hub.
