‘If We Left It As It Was, The IP Would Likely Die In 10 Years’

The release of Street Fighter 5 was a humbling moment for the team working on the game at Capcom. Following the massive success of Street Fighter 4 as the series moved online, the sequel was slammed by long-time fans at launch for missing content, a smaller initial roster, and problematic servers. The team needed to reboot its approach for Street Fighter 6 to get things back on track.

“When the two of us were talking during Street Fighter 5, we realized that if we didn’t do something about Street Fighter, the Street Fighter IP would probably die in 10 years,” producer Shuhei Matsumoto said during an October 2026 interview with Karin Ohira (via IGN). “It was critical. So, we had to make it a game where people would get to know it all over again and play it again.”

He mentioned that the Street Fighter players were aging up, roughly 35 to 45 years old compared to the youngsters playing the early games during the heydays of arcades. Matsumoto wanted to avoid a slow death for the franchise as those fans aged into retirement. Fighting games in general were taking a backseat to other much more prominent genres in the age of live service multiplayer.

“People knew of the scene, but weren’t actually playing the game, which made us think, ‘This is bad,’” he continued. “In the end, we’re a game company, yet people weren’t playing our game. Isn’t that the most fatal thing? So that was the biggest danger. We didn’t know if those people would continue with the same level of passion, and naturally, there’s a lifespan to things, right? That’s when we talked about how, if we left it as it was, the IP would likely die in 10 years.”

Matsumoto, who took over the franchise alongside director Takayuki Nakayama following the departure of series veteran Yoshinori Ono in 2020, said this was the basis for a number of changes to the series in Street Fighter 6. He stressed that the team didn’t want to take the brand’s legacy as a guarantee that players coming to it knew what to expect or how to play. A new Modern Controls system to streamline complicated button inputs was a big part of that. Street Fighter 6 also oriented the game around new modes and a more forgiving balance in the combat mechanics in some cases.

“While people say Street Fighter has high name recognition, we shouldn’t be overconfident,” the producer said. “We decided to act as if the current generation doesn’t know us. We have to properly explain things to those who are just starting to play games now–like who these characters are and how to play–so we don’t take that familiarity for granted.”

So far, it seems to have worked. Street Fighter 6 reached 7 million sales this past summer and has been tracking ahead of Street Fighter 5. We’ll see if it gets any kind of a boost from the upcoming live-action movie, out October 16. And thanks to the collections Capcom has put out in recent years, there’s never been a bigger selection of retro Street Fighter games to choose from for any of those lapsed old-heads.
