What a terrible day to love quirky Japanese video game developers and have eyes. Ikumi Nakamura, studio lead at Unseen, has put out a call for fraudulent gamer Elon Musk to try out her new game, Kemuri, at Tokyo Game Show. In a tweet on X, she wrote, “Hello @elonmusk. A bit nervous to ask this publicly, but—we’re hosting a small experimental closed event for KEMURI at our UNSEEN studio in Tokyo during TGS. If you’re around, I’d love to invite you.”
She also asked to speak with Musk via DM about her studio Unseen, and the message was enclosed with a cutesy, four-panel comic depicting a moment during 2019’s Game Awards when Nakamura and Musk were shown sitting together in the audience.

After leaving Tango Gameworks in 2019, Nakamura founded independent studio Unseen in 2021 and is currently working on its first game, Kemuri. Debuting at the 2023 Game Awards and getting a much more in-depth look during this year’s summer State of Play, Kemuri is a demon-hunting action game in which players absorb the powers of the demons they hunt, manifested as cool outfits.
Known for her bubbly, wholesome attitude, Nakamura has become a beloved figure among video game developers, which makes her solicitation of Musk all the more troubling. It’s worth noting that the encounter depicted in her comic took place in 2019—three years before Musk bought Twitter when his public image hadn’t quite made the jump to full-blown white supremacist. When commenters tried to make Nakamura aware that she’s asking for help from a documented racist, potentially imperiling players’ reception of Kemuri, she explained some of her reasoning for reaching out.
