Ahead of the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, another Zelda project just received a major development update. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will undoubtedly become the definitive way to experience the iconic adventure when it launches, but fans of the original N64 version may not want to abandon the classic game just yet. The ambitious Legend of Zelda: Indigo released a new trailer showcasing the mod’s development progress, and it’s putting an entirely new perspective on Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.
Nintendo is officially celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Zelda series in 2026 with releases like a special edition Nintendo Switch 2 and Pro Controller, collectible goods like an official Zelda ocarina instrument, and new amiibo figures based on Young Link and Young Zelda from Ocarina of Time. Zelda fans are also joining the celebration with their own creations in honor of the beloved franchise, including mods and fan games. Although the Zelda: Indigo mod doesn’t have a release date for its full version, fans can play an in-progress version right now to experience a new take on Ocarina of Time before the remake launches.
Zelda: Indigo Mod Showcased in New Trailer
The Legend of Zelda: Indigo is a ROM hack for the N64 Ocarina of Time that acts as a total conversion mod, replacing the original game with a new story, items, enemies, and map. While Ocarina of Time ROM hacks have been around for a while, Zelda: Indigo is perhaps the most ambitious project of its caliber. Currently, there are two demos available for Zelda: Indigo, giving players a chance to experience brief gameplay segments of the full mod.
A recent trailer for Zelda: Indigo showcased how far the project has progressed since its first demo debuted in 2023. This new trailer explores the Hyrule map players will experience in Zelda: Indigo, set 27 years after the events of Majora’s Mask on Zelda‘s Child Timeline. Included in the trailer are shots of environments like a snowy laboratory that looks straight out of Twilight Princess, a lily pad-covered take on Zora’s Domain, and even a gloomy mushroom-filled swamp that makes this mod feel like a true Majora’s Mask successor.
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the Indigo mod is Link himself, sporting a full beard to show how much the Hero of Time has aged since the events of Majora’s Mask. Other mechanics included in Zelda: Indigo, like the feather, which gives Link a higher jump, and the rusted anchor, which is a heavy-hitting melee weapon, offer distinct gameplay opportunities from Zelda items in past games. Dungeons are also designed in a way that enemy encounters feel more challenging, making Zelda: Indigo a ROM hack aimed at seasoned Zelda fans.
Even without an official release date, the fact that Zelda: Indigo has received a significant development update is a positive sign of its progress toward launch. The small team behind the ambitious project says it will announce a release date when the mod is ready, so interested fans will have to be patient until then. In the meantime, Zelda fans can officially revisit Ocarina of Time‘s Hyrule when the Nintendo Switch 2 remake launches later this week.
