Insomniac Games responded to recent allegations that the company used AI-generated artwork in Marvel’s Wolverine, quashing the rumors and providing an explanation. Marvel’s Wolverine launched on September 15 as a spin-off set in the same universe as Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series.
The newest superhero adventure from Insomniac Games puts a different protagonist from its previous games into the spotlight. Marvel’s Wolverine follows the titular mutant in a romp around the world to investigate the abduction of various mutants by Bolivar Trask, while taking place in the same timeline as the Marvel’s Spider-Man games. Marvel’s Wolverine has already seen an impressive start for Insomniac, quickly becoming the sixth-best-selling game on the PS5 in 2026 and grossing over $100 million. Now, an Insomniac director is responding to allegations that the game uses AI artwork.
Insomniac Director Quashes Marvel’s Wolverine AI Allegations
An Insomniac executive denied claims that the company used AI for art assets in Marvel’s Wolverine. In response to a claim alleging the use of AI concerning a distorted sign on an in-game restroom, Insomniac’s Director of Community and Marketing, James Stevenson, shared that the sign was the result of a UV map bug. Stevenson confirmed that a new update for Marvel’s Wolverine is on the way to fix the sign, which causes the silhouette on the sign to break apart and duplicate. The Insomniac director reiterated in his reply that the company did not use any AI-generated assets within Marvel’s Wolverine.
The AI controversy is far from the first of its kind within the industry, serving as one of gaming’s biggest hot-button issues. Many developers have received significant backlash for the use of AI-generated artwork in games, including recent allegations that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 uses AI art. Some studios have even openly used AI in popular games, including Epic Games implementing an AI-generated Darth Vader voice during a Star Wars-themed event in 2026. Steam has also implemented the requirement for games published on the marketplace to disclose any use of AI-generated assets on their store pages.
Marvel’s Wolverine‘s newest controversy comes as the game has seen a rocky launch, despite its sales success. The game has received notably more criticism from fans and critics than Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man games, with many citing the lack of depth in its combat and hand-holding as major issues. Insomniac even officially responded to criticisms against Marvel’s Wolverine, suggesting that the studio intends to work towards improving the game and “refining the player experience.”
Insomniac has already shown its commitment to supporting Marvel’s Wolverine through multiple early updates. A minor patch pushed ahead of the game’s Early Access release changed Wolverine’s appearance in the game, giving him a beard that better matched earlier designs. The studio also rolled out another minor hotfix on September 18, pushing fixes to a variety of bugs that would cause crashes, as well as making adjustments to the Scent Trail and Audio Sense indicators. Fans can only hope that Insomniac continues to improve and support Marvel’s Wolverine well into the future.
